I contacted Ricardo (actually his officemate) around 19:30 when I noticed that nobody from UW was logged in yet. Due to the miscommunication Ricardo thought he had swapped the time with another UW observer. Around 19:40 He gave me a new instrument setup request (other than what was listed for his program) and it required a grating change with DIS so it took me considerably longer than just a normal instrument swap, as the new gratings needed to be calibrated. I finally got him on the sky with a calibrated and focused instrument about 21:00. The time for the instrument setup was counted against the UW program. Seeing went bad (2 arc sec) around 01:30 for about 2 hrs. I switched over to GrIm at 04:40 and seeing was around 0.6 arc sec in J. The observer finished at 06:00 and I took the twilight time to put an 90mm eyepiece on the telescope and visually observe Saturn. SPECTACULAR!!! Cassini's division was crisp and black, I could see the inner crepe with no prolem. About 5 or 6 moons, and much detail in the cloudbelts. Did I say SPECTACULAR!?! Nothing like observing Saturn with sub-arc second seeing! ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:35 SPIcam 75(1389) 58 69 10.2/12.4 298 7 r' 0.84 19:39 NA2gdr 5416(36416) 58 69 10.0/12.4 324 6 R 0.79 20:52 DISslit -75(1214) 78 55 9.5/11.0 267 6 none 1.21 20:55 NA2gdr -1725(29274) 78 55 9.5/10.9 267 6 R 1.18 01:19 DISslit -75(1082) 0 77 9.1/9.1 120 3 none 0.95 01:21 NA2gdr -5036(25963) -1 77 9.1/9.2 109 3 R 0.66 05:01 Grimf/5 160(1310) 72 61 8.6/8.2 194 6 J 0.61 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 58 32 18 248 (WSW) 362 Clear none 17:01 56 31 12 279 (W) 463 Clear none 18:01 55 28 12 287 (WNW) 451 Clear none 19:01 50 25 5 333 (NNW) 502 Clear none 20:01 50 24 5 275 (W) 567 Clear none 21:01 50 23 6 267 (W) 540 Clear none 22:01 51 22 5 263 (W) 543 Clear none 23:01 50 23 7 268 (W) 529 Clear none 00:01 48 25 6 263 (W) 545 Clear none 01:01 48 24 1 243 (WSW) 503 Clear none 02:01 49 22 6 110 (ESE) 543 Clear none 03:01 43 27 9 90 (E) 560 Clear none 04:01 49 18 7 181 (S) 597 Clear none 05:01 47 21 5 199 (SSW) 611 Clear none 06:01 48 23 6 186 (S) 634 Clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
