Skies were generally clear, but an east wind was blowing by sunset. Shortly thereafter, the humidity began to climb. It leveled off just short of the closure condition and then backed off; the rest of the half was quiet with variable (but often reasonable) seeing, despite the east wind. In the half-hour before the shift change, we began to get clouds out of the northwest which, by 01:00, covered most of the sky. There was no indication of precipitation on radar and humidity remained steady in the 60% range, so I opted to stay open. I verified pointing with the Echelle and did a focus loop before handing over to Meredith. Almost as soon as she started science exposures, the rain sensor tripped without warning. I closed the mirror covers and ran upstairs ASAP yet found the primary had some rain spots on it already. In short order, it went from light rain to a fairly heavy downpour by 01:50. I went outside and covered the cloud camera. Around 02:30 I opened up again after the rain stopped, but within minutes, another band of clouds moved in and I ran outside again to cover the camera. Meredith gave up just after 05:30. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:19 cormass -250(1320) -94 74 11.7/16.3 75 13 - 0.00 20:24 NA2gdr -2000(32000)-94 73 11.7/15.9 78 14 R 1.23 01:27 Echelle -50(477) 176 74 11.5/12.8 100 6 clear 1.07 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 67 42 10 266 (W) MstlyClr none 17:01 69 44 6 215 (SW) MstlyClr none 18:01 67 45 12 214 (SW) MstlyClr none 19:01 62 46 3 260 (W) Clear none 20:01 54 48 12 74 (ENE) Clear none 21:01 53 47 10 61 (ENE) Clear none 22:01 54 44 8 80 (E) Clear none 23:01 56 41 5 87 (E) Clear none 00:01 57 40 0 196 (SSW) PtlyCldy none 01:01 54 42 6 108 (ESE) MstlyCldy none 02:01 52 44 3 104 (ESE) MstlyCldy none 03:01 51 44 1 141 (SE) MstlyCldy none 04:01 53 44 9 189 (S) MstlyCldy none 05:01 54 41 6 156 (SSE) MstlyCldy none 06:01 53 43 2 196 (SSW) MstlyCldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
