Seeing wasn't so great, with the east winds after sunset, but telescope and instrument performed flawlessly. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half started out peacefully, with skies clear of clouds but slightly hazy, and poor seeing. I observed an echelle fill which went normally. Everything was fine until just after 01:00, when the echelle slitviewer crashed with an unfamiliar error message. I tried a variety of restarts without success, then called Craig. He led me through another unsuccessful initialization attempt and then concluded that the problem was something that would have to be addressed in the daytime. I offered the observer an opportunity to use another instrument, but he wasn't very enthusiastic about it and instead gave me the time to use for engineering. I obtained two pointing models with very good results (the January change to the magnesensors improved pointing behavior noticeably; and the script that I wrote in early February should be very helpful in dealing with pointing changes on a nightly timescale). I also obtained some Shack-Hartmann data despite poor seeing and made an attempt at DIS throughput measurements after 05:00, when the haze seemed to have improved a little. Since our scheduled engineering in February and last week were weathered out, this proved a fruitful night in spite of the unfortunate echelle problems. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW13 E I/S 01:00 05:28 Ech SV hard crash ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:52 Echelle -42(283) 165 80 7.5/8.2 10 16 clear 0.89 23:39 Echelle -9(321) 58 58 7.6/7.5 68 24 ND1 1.7 05:04 DISslit 50(994) 15 61 3.4/3.3 74 23 - 1.38 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 49 16 0 269 (W) Clear none 17:01 48 18 5 358 (N) Clear none 18:01 46 12 14 20 (NNE) Clear none 19:01 44 10 12 3 (N) Clear none 20:01 45 13 19 23 (NNE) Clear none 21:01 47 2 23 21 (NNE) Clear none 22:01 48 3 18 51 (NE) Clear none 23:01 45 7 9 77 (ENE) Clear none 00:01 45 11 21 70 (ENE) Clear none 01:01 45 15 15 60 (ENE) clear, haze none 02:01 44 18 15 75 (ENE) clear, haze none 03:01 41 19 18 75 (ENE) clear, haze none 04:01 38 20 27 76 (ENE) clear none 05:01 38 20 22 69 (ENE) clear none 06:01 38 22 20 73 (ENE) clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
