We were open by 17:30 to cool and on the sky for SPIam twilight flats at sunset. The winds turned immediately eastward after sunset and caused predictably bad seeing thereafter, in the 3-4 arcsecond range. There was an evident problem with the temperature of the NA2 gcam (see PR 2004034) which made guiding very difficult (read: impossible) in combination with the seeing. A few waves of passing clouds from time to time and much cooler temperatures than other recent nights, but otherwise a fine first half. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half was very peaceful, with moderate to poor seeing. A few thin clouds peeped in and then moved away. Everything worked perfect.y. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:29 SPIcam 100(1303) 111 81 6.6/6.7 21 20 I 0.67 19:35 NA2gdr 1667(50667) 116 82 5.4/6.7 35 15 R 0.78 00:30 Echelle -12(101) 311 56 2.5/2.4 73 18 ND2 1.31 # - First temperature is air, second temperature is the telescope. ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 46 2 10 11 (N) 0 Clear none 17:01 46 1 12 344 (NNW) 0 Clear none 18:01 44 1 16 16 (NNE) 0 Clear none 19:01 45 -7 16 25 (NNE) 0 Clear none 20:01 43 -10 18 11 (N) 0 Clear none 21:01 44 -13 17 26 (NNE) 0 Clear none 22:01 38 4 16 45 (NE) 0 Clear none 23:01 37 5 15 76 (ENE) 0 Clear none 00:01 36 5 16 75 (ENE) 0 Clear none 01:01 37 5 16 71 (ENE) 0 mstly clr none 02:01 36 1 10 87 (E) 0 mstly clr none 03:01 36 2 14 79 (ENE) 0 clear none 04:01 36 5 8 82 (E) 0 clear none 05:01 33 6 15 76 (ENE) 0 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
