A sample of tonight's events: o Echelle guider crashed shortly after we switched from DIS to Echelle. o Bad magnasensor reading at 19:38. Fixed with long slews in alt. o Changed to DIS at 23:00. A "tertrot na2" failed with a warning about the clamp failing to engage. Quickly fixed by Russet. Don and I elected to hand over a little early to the second half program. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half remained clear, with good seeing at least part of the time. The humidity wandered upward for a while after midnight, and we had to close when the dewpoint got within a degree of the secondary temperature. A little frost formed on the front sill of the dome, right by the shutter opening, but no frost on the telescope. After 02:30 the dewpoint dropped again and we were able to re-open. We had a number of minor problems that were probably related to the cold temperatures: the tertiary clamp continued to fail every time we rotated the tertiary (workaround is to close the clamp with low-level commands); the eyelid sensors had trouble, complaining that the eyelid state was unknown (workaround is to run the mirror covers in manual mode); and all SH reference frames taken tonight turned out to be unusable for reasons that are unclear (workaround is to use a ref frame from one month ago). Most of these problams have been encountered before, so it took very little time to figure out what was going on and what to do about it; the problem with the SH reference frames was an exception, and that problem will have to be addressed more thoroughly at some point. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC04 E I/H 18:45 18:50 Echelle slitviewer crashed UC04 E I/H 19:38 19:45 Bad magnasensor crossing UC04 E T/H 23:00 23:05 Tertiary clamp failed NM09 O I/H 00:15 00:25 SH ref frames unusable ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:12 DISslit 0(569) 83 57 -7.6/-5.7 281 10 - 1.32 18:14 NA2gdr 262(47262) 83 57 -7.4/-5.9 281 10 R 1.30 18:49 Echelle -70(-392) 225 77 -7.3/-6.7 281 14 clear 0.99 20:19 Echelle 23(-278) 174 52 -7.1/-7.7 286 13 clear 0.97 21:37 Echelle 33(-270) 205 49 -7.4/-8.0 301 13 ND2 1.17 00:12 S-H -80(1056) 268 60 -7.3/-8.4 304 8 - 1.0 02:56 SPIcam 150(726) 93 69 -6.3/-8.3 37 19 R 0.87 04:33 SPIcam 300(994) 255 76 -2.3/-5.0 82 11 R 1.01 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 21 10 13 333 (NNW) clear none 17:01 23 10 11 295 (WNW) clear none 18:01 19 10 11 280 (W) clear none 19:01 19 10 12 279 (W) clear none 20:01 19 9 10 280 (W) clear none 21:01 19 8 15 295 (WNW) clear none 22:01 19 10 15 304 (NW) clear none 23:01 19 11 6 306 (NW) clear none 00:01 18 11 7 280 (W) clear none 01:01 19 13 9 346 (NNW) clear none 02:01 18 14 10 349 (NNW) clear none 03:01 21 -4 15 19 (NNE) clear none 04:01 28 -19 8 87 (E) clear none 05:01 28 -20 5 79 (ENE) clear none 06:01 31 -17 1 135 (SE) clear none 07:01 27 -19 6 106 (ESE) clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
