Winds were variable in speed and direction causing poor seeing conditions all evening. Temperatures tonight were perhaps the coldest of the season so far dropping well into the negative double digits (Celcius) all night. Shortly after focusing, for the first half, the observer noted that his REMARK was not letting him change priorities however it showed on my local version that priorities had indeed had been upgraded. Within 20 minutes other problems with the users REMARK started to surface, including that a SHIFT-CLICK was sending offsets with incorrect signs. After some investigation Craig advised that the user quit out of REMARK and restart. This solved the problem. At 23:30, the slitviewer had a hard crash. About 8 minutes was lost to reboot since I had to travel up to the intermediate level to type the password for the ICC. The beginning of second half there was a bit of confusion since the users were under the impression that they could use TUI to aquire GRIM images and still use their old MC dither scripts. This is not the case. TUI development for GRIM is not quite ready for prime time. With some scrambling and looking at the web documentation I was able to advise how to control GRIM fully from the MC. The observers apparently did not have access or a working version to REMARK at the location they were observing from at the time, just TUI. I may have been in partly responsible for the confusion when earlier in the night when the JHU observers logged in with TUI to test their connection and asked if it was possible to run TUI and MC dither scripts at the same time. Only after the start of their time was it clear they thought it was ok to control GRIM from TUI and use the MC for dithering. They ended up controlling the telescope with TUI for slews and the instrument and offsets with the MC. About 30 minutes of observering was lost due to the confusion. Several cold related problems popped up near the end of the night. Problem reports were filed for each. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW01 E T/S 19:00 19:30 Remark Errors from missing config UW01 E I/S 23:30 23:38 Slitviewer crashed ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:49 Echelle -345(-762) 170 77 -10.9/-9.0 5 4 clear 1.7 18:10 Echelle -283(-712) 96 72 -10.8/-9.4 355 5 nd2 1.78 00:30 GrimF/5 90() 208 72 -12.5/-10.4 28 2 Kshort 1.1 00:37 NA2gdr -992(34007) 208 72 -12.5/-10.4 28 2 R 2.29 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 16 4 4 347 (NNW) 550 clear none 17:01 13 9 1 348 (NNW) 504 clear none 18:01 12 7 9 5 (N) 234 clear none 19:01 12 4 5 322 (NW) 217 clear none 20:01 12 3 6 6 (N) 200 clear none 21:01 12 0 8 9 (N) 207 clear none 22:01 11 0 10 5 (N) 162 clear none 23:01 11 2 1 356 (N) 186 clear none 00:01 10 1 7 355 (N) 204 clear none 01:01 10 1 9 358 (N) 171 clear none 02:01 10 1 10 350 (N) 150 clear none 03:01 9 1 7 343 (NNW) 200 clear none 04:01 9 2 9 34 (NE) 245 clear none 05:01 9 1 12 347 (NNW) 251 clear none 06:01 7 2 10 358 (N) 271 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
