During checkout I found the AZ drive controller box (the big brown box hanging off the stars in the intermediate level) with only 3 of 4 green LEDs showing. I reset the box and all was fine. The stop button next to it was also set (I reset it as well). This was probably due to some power glitch we had this morning (Bruce sent an e-mail earlier to APO staff about the generator alarm going off this morning when he arrived on site). Everything checked out fine with the telescope systems, other than those two problems. The NA2guider crashed on us around 22:45. Russet and I used Craig's instructions and had it back up and running in about 10 mins, including a power cycle. We had the observer hand guide while we fixed the problem. No observing time was lost. The observer also noted that the spectra seemed double peaked for a couple of their images. Russet had been tweaking the focus during that time and determined that a "perfectly" focused slitview image is not well focused on DIS. Most likely a seasonal change item that we will address during our next engineering run (Monday night). 2nd half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half started well, with photometric skies and excellent seeing. Humidity was creeping upward, but slowly. Then, around 02:45, low-altitude clouds began to form just overhead. The weather pattern made me nervous even though the humidity at ground level was only 65% at the time, so we closed and sat back to watch the clouds thicken and the humidity climb. We never re-opened. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW11 D T/S 22:45 23:00 NA2guider crashed, rebooted ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:57 DISslit -50(1132) 88 72 5.8/9.7 184 6 none 0.92 19:02 NA2gdr -2062(28937) 87 73 5.4/9.5 185 9 R 0.75 01:48 SPIcam 100(1250) 192 62 5.3/4.9 277 15 R 1.01 01:48 NA2gdr -1500(35500)192 62 5.3/4.9 277 15 R 0.75 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 48 19 1 224 (SW) 288 Clear none 17:01 47 18 6 264 (W) 285 Clear none 18:01 43 16 1 165 (SSE) 277 Clear none 19:01 42 -1 7 186 (S) 328 Clear none 20:01 44 -7 10 213 (SSW) 242 Clear none 21:01 40 20 8 189 (S) 386 Clear none 22:01 39 18 6 261 (W) 300 Clear none 23:01 41 21 13 276 (W) 316 Clear none 00:01 43 25 11 268 (W) 375 Clear none 01:01 42 30 11 261 (W) 395 clear none 02:01 41 30 16 266 (W) 463 clear none 03:01 41 31 13 270 (W) 436 ptly cldy none 04:01 41 33 14 247 (WSW) 455 mstly cldy none 05:01 41 35 15 268 (W) 440 cloudy none 06:01 41 35 11 268 (W) 408 cloudy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
