Checkout went smoothly until it was time to check Grim out. It lost another quad. After about 35 resets of the instrument (luckily I took my laptop up to the enclosure to do the exposures and view the images, I was able to get 3 of the 4 quads back, although I thought that the now missing quad was one that was there before.). During focus the missing quad came back to life (YES 4 out of 4 quads for Grim again, we will see how long that lasts). Seeing was excellent at 0.66 arc sec in J. The 4 quads lasted about 15 mins and then we were back to 3. Clouds got too thick around 18:55 as I was attempting to start a focus run. I decided it was safer to close the enclosure than risk the telescope (temps above freezing and thicker clouds moving our way) so I shut things up at 19:10 to wait out the weather. The sky started to improve around 20:45 and I decided to go ahead and re-open around 20:55. I did a focus run and finished just in time for clouds to move back in. Joe observed thru them and they cleared out about 40 mins later. The missing quad (4th quad) came and went thru the evening. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half was very peaceful, with persistent thin clouds and good to excellent seeing. The upper right quad of GRIM came and went during the morning. The lower right quad (the one that failed before) was fine. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:49 Grim 379(977) 197 64 2.0/3.9 268 8 J 0.66 17:53 NA2gdr 1200(49200) 199 64 2.1/3.8 265 7 R 1.02 21:04 Grim 490(989) 123 67 1.1/1.5 271 9 J 0.58 23:27 Grim 500(1018) 128 52 1.3/0.9 293 11 J 0.89 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 42 28 14 269 (W) 242 Mst.
