I gave the Colorado students a guided tour as I prepared the telescope for tonight. I handed the telescope over to the NMSU observer at 19:40 when I finished with checkout. NMSU finished a few minutes ahead of schedule and the Colorado group decided to take a few minutes to put an eyepiece on Mars. Seeing was not the best but we did see detail and both Martian moons. We also noticed clouds moving in from the W. The clouds made working with Grim interesting as they kept occulting our star. We did manage to get focused and the observers went on to try acquiring data. We also noticed that the stars were landing on the left side of the chip (using GrIm at f/5) near the center. Since I didn't have a guider to do a pointing correction, the Colorado group just did a hand offset for their target. The clouds played havoc on trying to acquire anything useful with Grim until around 03:20 when there was a clearing. The observers were able to collect at least some useful data for the last part of the night. We looked at Saturn and the Moon with an eyepiece on the telescope, after it got too bright to observer anymore IR objects. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:24 DISslit 75(1073) 112 60 13.1/15.0 28 6 none 0.97 01:24 GrIm-f/5 130(1126) 89 51 10.9/11.8 151 12 Ks 0.95 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 17:01 66 43 9 218 (SW) 613 Clear none 18:01 61 41 4 259 (W) 550 Clear none 19:01 57 41 0 236 (SW) 640 Clear none 20:01 54 37 6 57 (NE) 510 Clear none 21:01 56 37 1 1 (N) 571 Clear none 22:01 56 37 1 358 (N) 560 Pt.
