The tertiary was left facing the echelle port to allow a pointing model to be obtained, with the possibility that it might later be rotated through a laborious manual method if we had the opportunity to do other work at NA2. We started out with tertiary tilts for the NA1 port (which will be invalid after the primary mirror is collimated) and went on to the pointing model (which will also be invalid after the primary is collimated, but which provides a diagnostic of telescope health). The large model required considerable babysitting because of clouds coming and going while the data were being taken, and we had to abort just a few points of finishing the model because of high humidity. However, the 195 points we obtained showed excellent behavior and a distinct improvement in stability compared to similarly large models taken last fall (more recent models had smaller samples, hard to compare accurately). The RMS error over the sky was 3.6 arcseconds, the best we've obtained in a while. Humidity remained at or above the limit for the remainder of the night, so we never attempted manual rotation of the tertiary. Plans for tomorrow night include collimation of the primary mirror, a new pointing model (50-80 points should suffice), new tertiary tilts for the echelle, and GRIM instrument blocks. SH data would also be very nice to obtain, but are not absolutely vital (and require good seeing conditions and reasonable transparency conditions, which are not very likely). ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:00 Echelle -54(150) 239 58 12.6/13.8 81 13 nd2 1.51 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 18:01 61 41 9 72 (ENE) 416 ptly cldy none 19:01 59 40 14 77 (ENE) 444 mstly clr none 20:01 56 45 18 76 (ENE) 492 mstly clr none 21:01 55 46 17 65 (ENE) 556 mstly clr none 22:01 54 45 21 73 (ENE) 442 ptly cldy none 23:01 54 46 15 75 (ENE) 440 ptly cldy none 00:01 53 48 15 87 (E) 591 ptly cldy none 01:01 52 49 11 84 (E) 736 mstly clr none 02:01 52 49 15 75 (ENE) 788 clear none 03:01 52 48 12 82 (E) 700 clear none 04:01 51 48 11 81 (E) 721 clear none 05:01 51 47 5 93 (E) 720 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
