We started with heavy widespread clouds and a sprinkle of rain. Then it cleared swiftly and unexpectedly after 21:30. We got a few hours of data, then clouds began to move in from the northeast, contrary to the usual direction of motion, and we closed. Radar showed sparse patches of rain approaching APO from three different directions. Instead colliding to form the perfect storm, these systems seemed to cancel one another out, but we did get a few more sprinkles in the process. Around 03:00 it again cleared rapidly, but I wasn't happy with the appearance of the radar or satellite images and decided to wait for a bit. I was finally comfortable enough to open just about at the point where the observer thought there was probably too little time to get any useful data. I focused quickly and saw that the seeing was poor, so I allowed her to continue into the time scheduled for PU04. That was perhaps a bad decision, but by the time I saw the seeing improve a little (to about 1.2 arcsec), it was too late to make the instrument change before twilight. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 22:27 SPIcam -300(1089) 5 63 15.6/17.7 126 1 r' 1.21 22:29 NA2gdr 257(49257) 4 63 15.3/17.6 122 1 R 1.97 03:49 DISslit -150(870) -30 53 12.9/14.5 137 14 - 1.55 Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 76 28 19 238 (WSW) 714 ptly cldy none 17:01 70 25 18 275 (W) 869 mstly cldy none 18:01 66 24 13 270 (W) 934 mstly cldy none 19:01 63 32 22 186 (S) 3269 cloudy none 20:01 61 31 4 114 (ESE) 1950 cloudy none 21:01 60 33 1 100 (E) 1787 cloudy sprinkles 22:01 59 32 1 109 (ESE) 1443 ptly cldy none 23:01 62 29 4 184 (S) 1337 mstly clr none 00:01 59 32 7 126 (SE) 2025 ptly cldy none 01:01 59 31 10 164 (SSE) 1855 cloudy none 02:01 60 31 12 220 (SW) 1524 cloudy sprinkles 03:01 57 32 17 189 (S) 1166 mstly clr none 04:01 56 34 13 135 (SE) 2281 mstly clr none 05:01 54 34 10 87 (E) 1534 ptly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
