Barentine Rain... thunder... lightning... a beautiful double rainbow at sunset... more rain... clouds... wind... Opened at 00:00 once the clouds had thinned sufficiently and the threat of rain seemed nonexistant. the clouds came in thick again at around 02:00; the observers read out their exposure early. While waiting out the clouds, the observer noted that a "dark lane" appeared to run down her spectrum in the dispersion direction, both in spectra of a standard star as well as the nucleus of an active galaxy. I checked the slit for physical obscuration but couldn't see anything obvious. This effect is seen in spectra from both the red and blue sides; for the record, the slit/grating combination being used was 1.5"/high. See PR 2003109 for more details. Clouds came and went while Jack and I tried to troubleshoot. Around 03:50, after taking cals while the troubleshooting was going on, Lauren decided to give it a shot regardless and slewed to a new position. The clouds proved too thick, so they threw in the towel at 04:00. The clouds remainder for the rest of second half, so we did not run the lens monitoring program. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC08 D I/H 02:00 04:12 DIS spectra out of focus ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 00:10 DISslit -300(677) 169 67 13.7/13.9 181 6 - 1.04 00:11 NA2gdr -2715(38284)170 67 13.8/14.0 180 9 R 0.94 04:30 SPIcam -150(1122) 168 42 14.2/13.4 242 6 r' 0.96 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 68 33 0 317 (NW) 857 Overcast none 17:01 66 25 0 219 (SW) 431 Overcast none 18:01 65 37 2 263 (W) 1937 Overcast rain 19:01 55 37 12 112 (ESE) 962 Overcast rain 20:01 51 40 14 78 (ENE) 1160 Overcast none 21:01 53 37 20 117 (ESE) 466 Overcast none 22:01 54 35 12 146 (SE) 533 Overcast none 23:01 58 31 0 133 (SE) 617 MstlyCldy none 00:01 57 32 9 186 (S) 664 PtlyCldy none 01:01 57 33 6 196 (SSW) 793 PtlyCldy none 02:01 57 33 2 226 (SW) 978 MstlyCldy none 03:01 58 32 4 265 (W) 873 MstlyCldy none 04:01 56 34 6 248 (WSW) 555 MstlyCldy none 05:01 57 32 5 200 (SSW) 688 PtlyCldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
