After a deceptively good seeing measurement early on, things totally went to pieces. Eventually the NA2 guider could no longer keep up with guiding, and the observer went at manual guiding of DIS. Seeing was as bad as ~5 arcseconds in this time. The humidity and dust crept upward after 23:00, causing us to close at a quarter to midnight. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Humidity remained high for several hours before dropping after 04:00. The dewpoint sensor on the 3.5m catwalk was showing lower humidity than the SDSS dewpoint sensor; after some study I decided that the difference was probably real, caused by the altitude difference between the two sensors. I decided to open in hopes that the dewpoint would drop as the telescope cooled. Alas, the telescope cooled and the dewpoint did not drop, so after one science exposure we had to re-close. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:43 DISslit -250(235) 57 65 2.4/3.0 104 11 - 1.89 20:53 NA2gdr -1491(39508)56 67 2.7/2.9 111 12 R 1.67 04:24 DISslit -150(-12) 204 61 -4.8/-4.7 75 8 - 2.37 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 38 3 18 314 (NW) 777 Clear none 17:01 38 4 10 333 (NNW) 651 Clear none 18:01 40 5 2 175 (S) 775 Clear none 19:01 38 5 5 24 (NNE) 853 Clear none 20:01 37 5 13 63 (ENE) 685 Clear none 21:01 35 3 13 118 (ESE) 830 Clear none 22:01 32 8 21 69 (ENE) 645 Clear none 23:01 27 16 23 77 (ENE) 1084 MstlyClr none 00:01 23 20 25 75 (ENE) 877 MstlyClr none 01:01 22 21 24 80 (E) 959 Clear none 02:01 22 20 15 79 (ENE) 742 clear none 03:01 22 20 17 76 (ENE) 942 clear none 04:01 22 17 7 79 (ENE) 882 clear none 05:01 23 18 8 80 (E) 928 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
