Dust levels (or smoke levels, possible -- there's rumor of a fire in the Gila mountains, and I thought I smelled smoke when I closed in the morning) rose to near the limit at sunset and spent much of the night hovering around closure levels, but by keeping the louvers closed and the press fans on I was able to keep the dust inside to an acceptable level, so we never had to close. DIS was in a mostly working state as sunset approached, with only few small problems to be resolved that did not prevent science. The first half observers started out with SPIcam, then switched to DIS around 23:30 for a few spectra. The second half observer had some trouble with her connection and at the last moment had to change venues to get a more reliable setup, so I spent the first few minutes of second half doing some extra DIS checkout and refocusing. After that, everything worked perfectly. We had nearly two hours of continuous subarcsecond seeing on the guider. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:24 SPIcam -75(912) 180 66 8.1/8.8 261 13 i' 1.06 20:27 NA2gdr 1289(50289) 182 66 7.8/8.7 243 15 R 1.19 23:57 DISslit -100(556) -68 52 6.4/6.3 276 11 - 0.89 23:58 NA2gdr 374(41374) -68 52 6.4/6.3 276 11 R 0.79 01:14 DISslit -150(486) 141 54 5.3/5.8 255 4 - 1.65 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 49 10 22 285 (WNW) 1189 clear none 17:01 51 4 22 293 (WNW) 1066 clear none 18:01 52 5 15 266 (W) 1133 clear none 19:01 52 4 14 257 (WSW) 1231 clear none 20:01 47 4 20 261 (W) 2627 clear none 21:01 46 2 17 270 (W) 2558 clear none 22:01 45 4 20 273 (W) 2117 clear none 23:01 43 8 11 265 (W) 2083 clear none 00:01 43 8 8 295 (WNW) 2213 clear none 01:01 43 8 7 267 (W) 2369 clear none 02:01 43 9 5 272 (W) 2336 clear none 03:01 44 8 9 304 (NW) 3010 clear none 04:01 43 9 8 303 (WNW) 2659 clear none 05:01 42 9 1 264 (W) 3207 clear none 06:01 43 10 6 352 (N) 2980 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
