At 18:00 I started checkout and opened for cooling. They then placed an eyepiece on the telescope to view Jupiter. I mounted DIS at 19:30 and we experimented with imaging and spectroscopy with their filters and mask. There was a problem we discovered that for a particular rotation direction and large mask rotations the mask motor would loose a few steps and the mask would not be quite reach the proper position.. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half started out with mediocre seeing and orographic clouds low in the northeastern sky, but the rest of the sky quite clear. By the middle of the shift, the clouds had cleared away and the seeing improved to subarcsecond. Everything worked perfectly without a hitch. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CU04 D I/H 19:30 20:00 slit wheel rotation problems ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:55 dis-slit -300(435) 98 53 6.3/8.0 231 13 - 1.3 00:13 Echelle -64(-250) 75 51 5.8/6.4 260 11 clear 1.42 03:23 Echelle -10(-293) 86 81 5.7/5.5 265 6 ND2 0.78 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 54 7 10 266 (W) 140 clear none 17:01 49 4 11 266 (W) 156 clear none 18:01 46 8 7 255 (WSW) 232 clear none 19:01 44 10 13 241 (WSW) 302 clear none 20:01 43 9 8 243 (WSW) 252 clear none 21:01 45 9 19 242 (WSW) 212 clear none 22:01 45 5 13 243 (WSW) 215 clear none 23:01 45 6 14 241 (WSW) 279 clear none 00:01 44 4 17 234 (SW) 245 mstly clr none 01:01 43 1 11 241 (WSW) 333 mstly clr none 02:01 43 5 9 272 (W) 353 mstly clr none 03:01 42 8 9 267 (W) 478 clear none 04:01 41 9 8 281 (W) 488 clear none 05:01 42 9 12 299 (WNW) 563 clear none 06:01 42 8 8 298 (WNW) 548 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
