Nice photometric skies and good seeing. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan When we focused spicam at the beginning of second half, I noticed the unusually high focus numbers and realized that the telex fans had never been turned on (the press fans were accidentally turned on instead). I knew that the focus would fall rapidly as soon as the fans were turned on, so I left them off while first spicam and then the guider were focused. Then I turned the fans on and used the guider to follow the focus allllll the way down from +250 to -100. Possibly a good source of information on which telescope temperatures affect our focus behavior, if anyone wants to reduce data from 20 different sensors. I noticed some subtle oddities with the guider which kept me occupied for a while trying to hunt them down, but even while I was doing that one of the observers made an unsolicited comment that the guider was working very well. So the strangeness was having no effect on science. Between the roaming focus and the observers' choice of 3x3 binning on spicam, it was hard to be certain of the seeing. However, it was generally good, often undersampled at 3x3 binning. And one image binned 1x1 taken at the end of the night gave 0.54 arcseconds. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:51 SPIcam 200(1185) 210 53 6.9/8.1 266 8 i' 0.72 18:53 NA2gdr 1321(50321) 211 53 6.8/8.1 265 8 R 0.75 19:52 SPIcam 200(1129) 142 60 5.8/7.3 265 6 i' 1.09 21:18 SPIcam 250(1132) 195 62 5.2/6.3 208 6 i' 0.87 23:42 SPIcam 250(1137) 39 49 6.1/5.5 250 8 i' 1.3 00:20 SPIcam 250(1106) -41 57 6.2/5.4 235 9 none 0.85 00:25 NA2gdr 3389(52389) -42 56 6.2/5.4 242 8 R 0.97 00:45 SPIcam 50(909) -44 54 6.1/5.3 227 9 none 1.10 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 51 9 11 269 (W) 181 clear none 17:01 49 8 9 280 (W) 190 clear none 18:01 45 7 5 266 (W) 187 clear none 19:01 45 6 7 269 (W) 221 clear none 20:01 44 7 7 267 (W) 274 clear none 21:01 41 7 8 225 (SW) 180 clear none 22:01 43 6 6 199 (SSW) 357 clear none 23:01 43 6 4 217 (SW) 312 clear none 00:01 43 6 6 237 (WSW) 220 clear none 01:01 43 6 8 235 (SW) 249 clear none 02:01 42 5 6 252 (WSW) 215 clear none 03:01 43 4 10 230 (SW) 155 clear none 04:01 43 3 8 264 (W) 159 clear none 05:01 43 4 8 275 (W) 160 clear none 06:01 41 6 7 266 (W) 154 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
