This was inconsistent with the seeing measurements coming off the NA2 guider. There had been no drastic ambient temperature change or other such effects which would suggest a drastic change in focus, but I thought perhaps something shifted in the instrument. I suggested to Bruce that he do another focus sweep, and the result indicated that best focus had changed from +200 to +50. At the same time, the GFP focus image showed that the image took a ~1.2 arcsecond excursion toward the east during the focus sweep; the line of star images showed an obvious "bend" from one end to the other. The image is: finesse:/export/data32/visitor1/apo2003c/n2/focus0254.fits I immediately suggested binding of the secondary through the small (50 step) focus increment moves of the secondary actuators. I did set focus/incr commands more frequently than I otherwise would to look for evidence of secondary binding in both the GFP images and on the guider, but didn't see anything obvious. At 2100 the observers decided to suspend observations due to thickening clouds. We reopened just after 2300 for almost two hours before closing again. There was no further evidence for weirdness in secondary behavior during the remainder of first half. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: J.Dembicky Clouds moved in around 00:55 and basically closed us for the remainder of the evening. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:57 gfp 400(1420) 206 77 2.1/2.0 125 4 6717A 0.76 18:12 NA2gdr 6113(57113) 218 75 2.6/2.0 139 2 R 1.33 18:59 gfp 200(1268) 84 49 1.6/1.7 174 5 6717A 0.83 19:04 NA2gdr 1085(52085) 84 50 1.8/1.7 166 6 R 0.98 23:21 gfp 200(1192) -10175 2.3/1.5 181 10 6717A 0.68 23:24 NA2gdr -594(50405) -10075 1.9/1.4 180 7 clear 1.14 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 37 19 0 186 (S) 130 MstlyClr none 17:01 37 18 2 102 (ESE) 105 MstlyClr none 18:01 36 1 2 110 (ESE) 0 PtlyCldy none 19:01 36 -2 6 170 (S) 183 PtlyCldy none 20:01 36 -6 7 179 (S) 128 MstlyCldy none 21:01 37 -10 7 178 (S) 175 MstlyCldy none 22:01 37 -10 8 178 (S) 344 MstlyCldy none 23:01 35 -11 8 181 (S) 188 PtlyCldy none 00:01 35 -12 8 180 (S) 46 PtlyCldy none 01:01 37 -10 11 181 (S) 110 Mst Cldy none 02:01 37 -10 13 172 (S) 114 Cloudy none 03:01 36 -11 9 181 (S) 110 Cloudy none 04:01 32 -13 9 176 (S) 64 Cloudy none 05:01 31 -14 13 181 (S) 56 Cloudy none 06:01 33 -13 11 183 (S) 76 Cloudy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
