The observer did not have a backup program so they requested work continue as long as possible and we would make a decision later wether they would be able to use the instrument or wether they would hand over the time to us. At about 18:45 Grim was still not functional however the next troubleshooting step was going to involve reading and burning EPROMs down in the lab so I mounted SPIcam for some impromptu Lens monitoring data. Seeing was very good for this hour of watching the Cross. Craig just finished the EPROM work as the Lens program was finishing. The problem still persisted after the installation of the new prom so the scheduled Observers elected to give up the remainder of their time. I gave the time to Jurek and John B. The wind shifted directions which caused seeing to degrade significantly by 23:00. At this point they decided to switch to SPIcam for the remainder of first half. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan I told Bill to mark the first-half time as being lost since we didn't know in advance whether or not GRIM would work. But in practice we did get a good half-night's science done -- just not for the scheduled program or a pre-planned backup program. Second half went more smoothly. Skies were photometric and seeing was moderate. We encountered one unusual bug when the observer, who was using shift+click to guide on a target too faint for the autoguider, accidentally resized her image window with apple+click. After that, her shift+click offsets went in the wrong direction and rapidly moved the star out of the field of view. She paused her science exposure while I got the star back, and we resolved the problem pretty quickly with only a few minutes of time lost. There were no further problems after that. The echelle slitviewer ICC was in a non-responsive state needing rebooting at the time of the program changeover, but it never crashed during second half. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC07 G I/H 18:03 00:00 Grim missing quad(s) UW07 E I/S 00:55 01:02 apple+click messed up shift+click ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:14 SPIcam -80(979) 163 72 6.6/8.2 185 13 empty 0.95 19:24 NA2gdr 765(49765) 172 60 6.6/7.8 207 16 R 0.69 21:08 dis-slit 170(809) 200 69 6.9/6.6 186 13 - 1.21 21:22 NA2gdr -1937(42062) 209 68 6.7/6.6 191 16 clear 0.94 23:29 SPIcam -50(888) 17 68 5.7/5.4 188 12 r' 0.94 00:16 Echelle 71(-2) 59 36 5.2/5.2 206 14 ND2 1.36 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 53 18 14 216 (SW) 344 clear none 17:01 47 21 11 187 (S) 379 clear none 18:01 44 25 11 180 (S) 364 clear none 19:01 44 26 13 184 (S) 429 clear none 20:01 44 20 18 210 (SSW) 380 prtly cldy none 21:01 44 19 11 184 (S) 567 clear none 22:01 43 29 15 203 (SSW) 406 clear none 23:01 42 26 13 211 (SSW) 819 clear none 00:01 42 25 14 209 (SSW) 1406 clear none 01:01 42 24 13 224 (SW) 1328 clear none 02:01 41 24 10 246 (WSW) 992 clear none 03:01 40 27 11 234 (SW) 881 clear none 04:01 40 22 7 240 (WSW) 773 clear none 05:01 40 18 5 264 (W) 539 clear none 06:01 38 16 6 263 (W) 398 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
