Craig seemed to track down this obscure problem but the cause eluded us. As soon as we had the observer try switching from his wireless/airport connection to a LAN line the instrument started losing the lower right QUAD. We gave the observer the option to lose skytime or to handle the problem in post processing and he elected to lose skytime. After 55 minutes we got all 4 quads back for several readouts but as soon as we got back on the sky the problem returned. At 23:10 with still no luck at returning all the quads the Observers decided to give up. Russet used this to get some Shack Hartmann data. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half had very good seeing and photometric skies, but it was not without its frustrations. The tertiary failed to clamp itself automatically after rotating, so it required an extra couple of minutes to command the clamps to close individually. The echelle slitviewer computer crashed three times during the morning. The first two times we didn't notice the crash when it happened; I was surprised to discover that the relevant error message is not highlighted in color in the TUI. In both those cases, a few photons were lost on the exposure which was tracking without the guider, but the exposure was still usable; we discovered the problem when we slewed to the next target, and acquisition was delayed for several minutes while I rebooted the slitviewer ICC. I caught the third crash by doing a tail -f on the log, so in that case we were able to reboot during the exposure without losing any observing time. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC07 G I/H 20:35 00:00 Lost quad(s), quit after 2.5 hr NM07 E I/S 01:53 01:58 Ech SV ICC crash NM07 E I/S 03:06 03:12 Ech SV ICC crash ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:06 GrIm2(f/5) 75(774) 14 71 4.8/5.7 237 13 H 0.78 18:14 NA2gdr -1831(48268) 11 71 4.7/5.6 243 17 Red+ND2 0.85 20:00 GrIm2(f/5) 175(817) 11 60 4.9/4.0 268 16 H 1.13 23:13 S-H 20(1248) 11 82 4.7/4.3 268 13 - Good 00:12 Echelle 34(-192) 6 70 4.6/4.0 274 10 ND2 0.76 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 45 -2 15 266 (W) 135 clear none 17:01 42 2 17 232 (SW) 222 clear none 18:01 39 6 16 224 (SW) 251 clear none 19:01 39 -1 7 251 (WSW) 264 clear none 20:01 40 -3 13 264 (W) 223 clear none 21:01 41 -2 15 262 (W) 209 clear none 22:01 41 -3 13 266 (W) 201 clear none 23:01 41 -3 15 287 (WNW) 217 clear none 00:01 40 0 11 271 (W) 290 clear none 01:01 40 -3 11 267 (W) 215 clear none 02:01 40 -3 10 258 (WSW) 201 clear none 03:01 40 -4 12 276 (W) 266 clear none 04:01 40 -3 8 265 (W) 307 clear none 05:01 40 -4 9 275 (W) 179 clear none 06:01 37 -5 7 262 (W) 163 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
