Bill called early in the evening to brief me on the 2dry actuators situation such that I'd know what to look for if anything went awry. Nothing of note until a fairly big jump in the image position on the DIS slitviewer occurred around 21:30, but after an exposure was in progress. No adjustments to focus or slit position. didn't notice anything odd in the mirror status. Shift was mainly in altitude. Magnasensors showed some readings in the 20-ish arcsecond range. During a science exposure just short of 23:00 I noticed harmonic vibration of loads cells A nd B on the dataq, along with similar vibration on the traces of the two drive motors (but not the rotator). I commented to Russet about how we were pointed into the wind at the time, but it looked more like the motors may have been inducing oscillations in the primary. It all damped out within a couple of minutes, but promptly came back shortly thereafter. The amplitude and modulation of the noise on the load cells changed on a scale of seconds, suggesting wind. During this time I made many updates of the position of my object on the DIS slit; the direction the field was moving corresponded to azimuth, but the moves were small. Once we were clear of the meridian, the guiding became better behaved. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half was mostly clear and peaceful, with good seeing. Once we left the high-altitude object at the end of first half, the telescope behaved very well aside from one failure of mirror covers under automatic. No trouble with the secondary actuators in this nice warm weather. The focus behavior of DIS tonight was similar to last night, perhaps related to the holding current on the secondary actuators -- but it didn't seem to be having too much impact on image quality. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:54 DISslit -100(890) 192 75 7.3/8.2 347 8 - 0.81 17:58 NA2gdr 694(44694) 196 75 7.3/8.1 353 2 R 0.85 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 46 -3 7 2 (N) 53 MstlyClr none 17:01 45 -4 6 358 (N) 62 MstlyClr none 18:01 46 -4 6 340 (NNW) 61 Clear none 19:01 46 -3 16 343 (NNW) 73 Clear none 20:01 46 -1 8 13 (NNE) 69 Clear none 21:01 47 -1 8 343 (NNW) 68 Clear none 22:01 46 -1 20 348 (NNW) 63 Clear none 23:01 47 0 5 9 (N) 95 Clear none 00:01 46 -1 20 9 (N) 94 Clear none 01:01 45 -3 12 10 (N) 88 clear none 02:01 45 -5 24 17 (NNE) 89 clear none 03:01 44 6 16 15 (NNE) 40 clear none 04:01 44 18 16 7 (N) 62 mstly clr none 05:01 43 22 26 21 (NNE) 42 mstly clr none 06:01 43 24 24 34 (NE) 47 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
