Ran Ed Turner's lens monitoring program first, then handed over to Don around 19:30 after getting some cals and focusing for DIS. He decided to switch over to Echelle at 22:00 for the remainder of first half. Seeing was a rollercoaster for most of the half, swinging rapidly around in the 1-2 arcsecond range. There were passing waves of cirrus that made things distinctly non-photometric, while generally clear. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan There was a bad magnesensor measurement during the latter part of the first-half program which took me a while to catch: pointing was adequate, but tracking was poor. Once I figured it out, the fix was easy enough. The program changeover was difficult, with not only a double grating-change but also one of almost every common problem: stuck mirror covers, another bad magnesensor measurement, a BadAltDTime, a couple of obs-spec miscommunications, two rotator slew refusals, and a guider ICC crash. These were minor annoyances but did cause some delay in getting going. We closed for a while when the clouds were blocking too many photons. Later in the morning, the clouds cleared away, but the seeing never got much better. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC02 E T/H 22:41 22:51 bad alt magnesensor meas NM03 D T/H 00:25 00:30 mirror covers wouldn't open fully NM03 D T/H 00:35 00:40 bad alt magnesensor meas ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:47 SPIcam 10(979) 190 74 5.7/6.3 231 18 r' 1.20 17:53 NA2gdr 2443(51443) 195 74 5.7/6.2 245 21 R 1.37 19:39 DISslit -75(816) 118 48 5.8/5.4 276 20 - 1.58 22:21 Echelle 47(-139) 181 75 5.7/5.1 255 15 ND1 1.40 00:44 dis-slit -100(686) 9 70 4.4/4.2 222 24 - 1.8 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 46 13 12 226 (SW) 0 PtlyCldy none 17:01 42 15 18 229 (SW) 0 PtlyCldy none 18:01 42 9 23 247 (WSW) 0 PtlyCldy none 19:01 42 7 21 259 (W) 0 PtlyCldy none 20:01 42 8 23 271 (W) 0 PtlyCldy none 21:01 42 12 19 271 (W) 0 PtlyCldy none 22:01 42 12 14 265 (W) 0 PtlyCldy none 23:01 41 13 21 236 (SW) 0 PtlyCldy none 00:01 41 13 20 240 (WSW) 0 PtlyCldy none 01:01 40 13 20 251 (WSW) 0 cirrus none 02:01 40 13 21 257 (WSW) 0 cirrus none 03:01 39 13 23 260 (W) 0 cirrus none 04:01 40 9 18 263 (W) 0 mstly clr none 05:01 39 10 24 203 (SSW) 0 clear none 06:01 37 11 24 231 (SW) 0 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
