Did not run the PU lens monitoring program due to the extremely poor seeing -- variable at 2 arcseconds FWHM in R and higher. Sloan reported measurements on their guider of up to about 4 arcseconds. We switched to DIS and began tracking at non-sidereal rates to get spectra of asteroids, but the seeing did not improve. Clouds thickened in the hour after sunset and stayed relatively soupy for the next couple of hours. Later in the half, the wind direction slowly swiveled around through south toward southwest, and our seeing improved accordingly. The clouds thinned somewhat as well. 2nd half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half was peaceful, with good seeing and very thin clouds eventually clearing away completely. The guider showed some strange background variations coming and going, but it took care of itself and never actually misidentified the star. There was also an image jump >10 arcseconds associated with a focus update where the secondary did NOT change directions; occasional jumps on monotonic secondary moves have been cropping up more often lately. That ended up messing up a few minutes' worth of integration. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW04 D T/H 04:17 04:22 focus update caused image jump ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:06 SPIcam -100(1044) 201 79 8.8/10.5 167 14 r' 1.61 18:06 NA2gdr 665(49665) 201 79 8.8/10.5 167 14 R 1.74 18:36 DISslit 40(814) 188 78 9.5/10.0 179 9 - 2.74 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 53 26 10 174 (S) 677 MstlyCldy none 17:01 51 26 12 177 (S) 472 MstlyCldy none 18:01 48 25 11 162 (SSE) 833 MstlyCldy none 19:01 49 24 12 178 (S) 1000 MstlyCldy none 20:01 51 20 11 183 (S) 421 MstlyCldy none 21:01 51 23 9 178 (S) 352 MstlyCldy none 22:01 50 19 11 175 (S) 503 PtlyCldy none 23:01 50 24 16 192 (SSW) 573 PtlyCldy none 00:01 50 25 17 202 (SSW) 554 PtlyCldy none 01:01 49 24 13 188 (S) 510 cirrus none 02:01 50 27 18 192 (SSW) 556 cirrus none 03:01 50 20 15 179 (S) 598 cirrus none 04:01 49 26 12 176 (S) 589 mstly clr none 05:01 49 27 18 178 (S) 665 mstly clr none 06:01 48 29 14 180 (S) 629 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
