Toward 20:30 the dust level was on its way down, and Sloanies informed me they planned to open. I opened as well, shortly thereafter. Clouds thickened during this time accompanied by strong west winds and poor (~2 arcsec FWHM unfiltered) seeing. Continued clouds throughout the remainder of the half and poor, variable seeing. 2nd half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Bad seeing (1.5-3 arcsec) and variable cirrus made it very hard for the second-half observer to get useful data on his faint targets. After trying two objects without success, he switched over to a lower-priority backup program. But even so he ran short of usable targets before the night was over. I asked and he kindly agreed to let me try some work with the Shack-Hartmann, delaying his cals until twilight. The time turned out to be very valuable: I managed to fix the tertiary tilts for the SH and get a couple of stars at different altitudes through thin clouds. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:52 dis-slit 100(914) 198 77 9.5/11.0 278 22 - 1.19 22:24 NA2gdr 0(44000) 292 29 8.7/9.1 279 28 R 1.75 00:23 DISslit 75(835) 236 41 7.3/7.5 264 21 - 2.25 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 59 21 18 259 (W) 1616 PtlyCldy none 17:01 52 20 18 246 (WSW) 3395 PtlyCldy none 18:01 49 20 14 243 (WSW) 4875 PtlyCldy none 19:01 49 20 14 249 (WSW) 3063 PtlyCldy none 20:01 49 21 14 285 (WNW) 1213 PtlyCldy none 21:01 49 21 22 281 (W) 875 PtlyCldy none 22:01 48 21 24 262 (W) 694 PtlyCldy none 23:01 48 20 21 266 (W) 711 PtlyCldy none 00:01 46 20 22 269 (W) 668 cirrus none 01:01 45 19 21 266 (W) 623 cirrus none 02:01 43 19 19 279 (W) 981 cirrus none 03:01 41 20 23 266 (W) 707 mstly clr none 04:01 40 21 16 267 (W) 738 cirrus none 05:01 39 22 15 284 (WNW) 750 cirrus none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
