Quiet again, until about 22:30 when Peter informed me that he saw the intermittent "stairstep" pattern in his image obj0035r.fits, of which I have saved a copy in /export/images. This time the pattern seemed larger than usual, about 150 rows wide. It only affected the one image, and after informing me of it, he went right back to taking spectra. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan The initial focusing and checks of DIS at the program changeover took a little extra time because of the long-known instability of the bay 2 grating motors, and the fact that the observers needed their wavelength centers to be very close to what they requested. I handed the telescope over to the observers at 01:20 after getting just over an arcsecond on the focus runs. Within an hour, however, the seeing blew up, and for the remainder of the morning it hovered between 1.5 and 2.5 arcseconds. This sometimes made target identification and centering difficult, so observing was not very efficient. But quite a few photons were collected even so. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:14 dis-slit 115(1187) 188 80 14.6/16.9 89 0 - 0.90 19:19 NA2gdr -265(43734) 194 79 14.5/16.8 102 2 R 0.97 21:55 dis-slit 100(1065) 145 61 13.7/13.9 84 9 - 0.80 21:58 NA2gdr 224(44224) 147 62 13.8/13.9 84 10 clear 0.82 01:14 DISslit 100(1033) 170 57 12.8/12.9 22 2 - 1.02 01:20 NA2gdr 591(46691) 172 57 12.9/12.8 126 0 ND2 1.1 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 66 29 7 258 (WSW) 407 Clear none 17:01 64 30 5 207 (SSW) 443 Clear none 18:01 59 28 1 208 (SSW) 485 Clear none 19:01 59 28 0 345 (NNW) 580 Clear none 20:01 57 28 6 89 (E) 451 Clear none 21:01 57 23 8 87 (E) 365 Clear none 22:01 57 18 9 89 (E) 268 Clear none 23:01 58 16 14 67 (ENE) 231 Clear none 00:01 57 13 12 44 (NE) 188 Clear none 01:01 56 13 11 52 (NE) 239 clear none 02:01 54 12 0 262 (W) 245 clear none 03:01 53 14 1 20 (NNE) 240 clear none 04:01 53 15 2 289 (WNW) 269 clear none 05:01 53 16 0 96 (E) 282 clear none 06:01 51 18 9 45 (NE) 318 clear none 07:01 50 21 13 90 (E) 302 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
