Skies were clear and winds light, with seeing of 0.9" arcsec FWHM in R measured a mere 10 minutes after opening the dome. Shortly after 20:00, the NA2 guider bought the proverbial farm and we lost guiding capability (see PR ID 2003163 for details; representative images are in tycho:/export/images/NA2gdr031018). As last night, the wind turned in this period to the north-northeast, and with it went our lovely seeing. After Russet came in and power cycled the guider, it finally came back. Then, around 00:30, Kevin reported an incidence of the famous DIS "stripe" (appearing at low row number, possible related to some kind of electronics problem) in image /export/images/18oct03.0033r.fits. The preceding and following images were okay, so he forged ahead. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan The second half observer was working with TUI; the transition from Remark to TUI went without a hitch. Skies were clear and seeing good to excellent all morning. I pursued focus during exposures without any formal focus runs. No further trouble with the guider. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:16 dis-slit -50(1009) 181 78 13.4/16.6 253 0 - 0.97 19:19 NA2gdr 1440(42440) 184 78 13.2/16.5 237 0 R 0.89 23:18 dis-slit 175(1124) 160 56 13.7/13.2 83 10 - 0.91 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 67 30 7 244 (WSW) 413 Clear none 17:01 63 28 6 264 (W) 473 Clear none 18:01 58 30 2 231 (SW) 546 Clear none 19:01 56 28 0 239 (WSW) 624 Clear none 20:01 54 24 4 356 (N) 532 Clear none 21:01 57 12 3 358 (N) 180 Clear none 22:01 56 24 5 38 (NE) 485 Clear none 23:01 57 23 8 76 (ENE) 419 Clear none 00:01 56 22 11 81 (E) 378 Clear none 01:01 57 20 10 81 (E) 326 clear none 02:01 56 20 9 84 (E) 275 clear none 03:01 56 20 9 83 (E) 259 clear none 04:01 56 20 9 61 (ENE) 289 clear none 05:01 55 20 9 80 (E) 322 clear none 06:01 55 19 9 81 (E) 364 clear none 07:01 55 18 8 82 (E) 291 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
