After the observer finished his cals I focused the telescope and although pointing didnt appear poor I did a pointing correction. This was a mistake apparently since it screwed up the tertiary tilts. When no stars (even Altair) could not be found temporary panic ensued. Luckily I had mounted spicam on na1 and verifed that it was indeed the tert tilts and not something else wrong. Pointing was fine when I reverted the tilts back to the values from last night. Just before midnight the telescope mysteriously quit tracking. TUI indicated that a stop button was engaged but only for the Azimuth motor. I did a quick walk around and verified there were no stop buttons engaged. Reinitializing the axis motors corrected this problem. A note was made in the hub log to alert the day staff to look into the cause. Hopefully this is not an early symptom of Azimuth drive failure (again). Perhaps it was just a slippage of the friction drive. The rest of the night went smoothly. Seeing was good, being subarcsec, all night. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NM08 E T/S 20:00 20:40 Echpoint sent star away NM08 E T/U 23:50 00:00 Tracking quit/read stop switch ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:00 Echelle 38(193) 130 51 10.7/11.8 245 7 nd2 0.87 01:12 Echelle 102(167) -16577 11.2/10.9 269 9 nd1 0.71 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 57 33 10 257 (WSW) 531 clear none 17:01 58 34 11 267 (W) 1074 clear none 18:01 56 33 10 286 (WNW) 904 clear none 19:01 53 33 11 288 (WNW) 885 clear none 20:01 52 34 8 243 (WSW) 887 clear none 21:01 53 33 12 262 (W) 728 clear none 22:01 53 33 14 253 (WSW) 725 clear none 23:01 52 36 7 243 (WSW) 669 prtly cldy none 00:01 52 36 9 217 (SW) 622 prtly cldy none 01:01 52 33 11 272 (W) 629 clear none 02:01 52 32 14 288 (WNW) 616 clear none 03:01 52 32 8 275 (W) 586 clear none 04:01 51 30 9 302 (WNW) 555 clear none 05:01 51 27 11 334 (NNW) 664 clear none 06:01 52 23 18 304 (NW) 496 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
