Keeping the fans off would hopefully give us a little time on the sky without risking dew forming on the primary. We opened around 19:15 and Russet started working on the pointing problem. Humidity levels stayed around 83% for the next hour and she did a temp. fix to get us by for the first half. We turned the telescope back over to the 1st half observers at 20:20. Seeing was very poor at 3.4 arc sec and variable. We also had clouds forming in the East and slowly moving to the West as well as wind gusts in the 31 MPH range. I handed the telescope over to Russet (she was pre-empting the 2nd half observer tonight to get an NA2 instrument block and NA2 pointing model). The mirror was colder than the outside air temp and we pushed the limits a bit to get the NA2 instrument block completed before I decided the mirror temperature was getting a little too close to the dew point, no dew had formed on the mirror, but I wasn't taking any chances. We did finish the NA2 instrument block though, and now just needed to finish the pointing model for NA2. The telescope primary temperature and dewpoint remained too close to attempt to open for the remainder of the night. We still need to do a pointing model and Russet said she would be in tommorow to help out with that, so it looks like we will need to pre-empt tommorows science for a little while to get the pointing model completed. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:22 Echelle 500() 123 26 5.3/7.6 68 26 ND2 3.4 -------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 17:01 46 42 17 64 (ENE) 791 Mst.
