The seeing was sub arcsec until about 30 minutes before I closed when it degraded within a minute from 0.8 to 2 arcseconds. At the end of twilight flats the observer asked why there was this horrible gradient across his flats. Upon investigation it appeared that the filterwheel was misregistered and the wheel was vignetting the beam. The filterwheel was removed, spicam reinitalized and that corrected the problem. The vignetting ruined half an hour's worth of flats, but occurred during twilight, so that no officially scheduled time was lost. Second Half Observing Specialist: R. McMillan Second half started with thick clouds and a visit from a small delegation of snowflakes. Skies cleared and humidity rose; humidity dropped and skies clouded, while ominous things approached on radar. (Well, ominous unless you consider that every drop of moisture helps keep us from following the example of Mt. Stromlo.) We never re-opened. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CU02 S I/H --:-- --:-- Spicam filterwheel was misregistered and vignetting the images. ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:21 SPIcam -200(461) 98 59 0.1/1.3 343 6 Ha 0.81 18:21 NA2gdr 484(61484) 98 59 0.1/1.3 343 6 R 0.80 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 37 27 0 296 (WNW) 102 clear none 17:01 34 26 5 303 (WNW) 55 clear none 18:01 33 27 3 284 (WNW) 81 prtly cldy none 19:01 32 27 6 331 (NNW) 62 prtly cldy none 20:01 33 25 5 285 (WNW) 76 mstly cldy none 21:01 34 25 3 294 (WNW) 41 mstly cldy none 22:01 33 24 1 355 (N) 90 mstly cldy none 23:01 34 24 4 263 (W) 97 cldy none 00:01 33 24 7 256 (WSW) 95 cloudy none 01:01 34 24 11 330 (NNW) 68 cloudy none 02:01 33 22 7 335 (NNW) 72 cloudy lt snow 03:01 32 24 16 0 (N) 103 ptly cldy none 04:01 31 25 10 357 (N) 53 ptly cldy none 05:01 31 22 7 20 (NNE) 30 ptly cldy none 06:01 31 22 15 22 (NNE) 39 ptly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
