Changed instruments to DIS at 2350. Second half Observing Specialist: R. McMillan Second half was clear most of the time, with mostly good seeing. The UW group spent some time playing with DIS in both imaging and spectral modes. I noticed that the DIS red detector had considerably more trouble than the blue one in dealing with saturated stars. This should not be a frequent problem in our normal modes of observing, however. At 03:30 the UW folks had tried everything they could think of and handed the telescope over to me for some engineering checks. Analysis of the Shack-Hartmann data showed that it wanted the secondary X tilt to change by over 50 arcsec, a fairly large value. When we examined a defocused donut on the DIS slitviewer, no coma was apparent; however, I later checked again with the Echelle slitviewer (which has less distortion from its own optics) and could clearly see the decentering. Following the S-H recommendations for tilt helped. I then returned to the S-H and checked the old collimation again. It recommended changes in a similar direction, but smaller. I made the newer changes (reasoning that the telescope has settled a little since evening) and remeasured, finding the coma much reduced. I left the collimation changes in place; since the changes were small, I didn't make any alterations to the pointing model. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:35 ShackHart -30(1622) 151 60 15.8/16.8 179 13 -- 1.2 22:17 Grim-F/5 160(1120) 22 56 15.8/15.8 146 19 Kshort 0.72 00:23 DISSLIT 25(888) 147 71 14.0/14.5 135 15 -- 0.95 04:17 Echslit 134(142) 126 61 15.0/14.0 230 7 ND2 0.90 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 63 45 0 181 (S) mst cldy none 17:01 65 42 0 221 (SW) mst cldy none 18:01 64 45 1 155 (SSE) prt cldy none 19:01 61 46 1 95 (E) mst clr none 20:01 59 43 7 185 (S) mstly clr none 21:01 61 42 11 179 (S) mstly clr none 22:01 60 42 14 144 (SE) mstly clr none 23:01 58 43 18 141 (SE) mstly clr none 00:01 58 44 16 131 (SE) mstly clr none 01:01 56 43 7 139 (SE) mstly clr none 02:01 59 41 8 204 (SSW) mstly clr none 03:01 59 41 6 180 (S) ptly cldy none 04:01 57 41 6 208 (SSW) clear none 05:01 59 40 6 218 (SW) clear none 06:01 57 41 4 189 (S) clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
