After the sky darkened I first checked the health of the recently reinstalled NA2 guider, then turned to the Shack-Hartman for additional measurements. In the folder E:\SH\2002-09-21, took the following images: Image name Exposure Comment Ref001 300 s Reference Ref002 300 s Reference Ref003 300 s Reference Mir026 30 s Sequence number not reset Mir027 30 s Air-Struc temp diff 0.2 C Mir028 30 s Mir029 30 s Mir030 30 s Mir031 30 s Mir032 30 s Mir033 30 s Mir034 30 s Mir035 30 s After this effort I turned the telescope over to Don a few minutes before his scheduled start time. Things went well until 23:00; after a few slews up and down in altitude, Don asked for a focus run and a pointing correction, since he said the pointing was off by about 20 arcseconds in two successive pointings near the zenith. At the position of his next object (-16d dec), there was nothing on the slitviewer. I did a couple track/pterrs with failures to detect stars in each case. I sent the tertiary to NA2 and back and switched instruments back and forth from the echelle to dis to see if I could get it to recover. After slewing up to Deneb to see if I could at least detect scattered light from that bright star, it landed at the expected place on the slitviewer. A pointing correction and a focus run later, Don was able to slew back to his object and continue. No problems after that for the remainder of his time. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half went very well, with clear skies aside from a few small puffs of clouds. Seeing was good, and the pointing was also good after I made an adjustment to the tertiary tilts for the NA1 port. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC02 E I/H 23:00 23:20 Echelle pointing suddenly off ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:19 S-H 100(1486) 171 62 11.4/12.0 301 15 - 1.00 20:46 Echelle 165(36) 188 72 11.8/11.9 302 15 clear 0.94 23:25 Echelle 101(-24) 310 67 12.1/12.0 287 6 clear 0.60 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 55 27 16 324 (NW) 118 PtlyCldy none 17:01 56 28 12 289 (WNW) 120 PtlyCldy none 18:01 55 30 11 304 (NW) 133 MstlyClr none 19:01 53 29 9 310 (NW) 94 Clear none 20:01 52 29 11 309 (NW) 78 Clear none 21:01 54 29 12 300 (WNW) 117 Clear none 22:01 54 30 2 286 (WNW) 151 Clear none 23:01 53 30 6 287 (WNW) 145 Clear none 00:01 53 30 9 293 (WNW) 158 Clear none 01:01 53 29 5 271 (W) 160 clear none 02:01 53 29 4 269 (W) 154 mstly clr none 03:01 51 28 11 309 (NW) 120 mstly clr none 04:01 51 26 1 359 (N) 81 mstly clr none 05:01 52 25 3 351 (N) 67 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
