Radar did not indicate any precipitation in the area, so I kept the enclosure open. Craig and I went up to the outside catwalk at 20:00 to watch a test run at WSMR. Shortly before it clouded up, I took some sky flats with GRIM in hopes of getting throughput measurements later on: Image Exposure(s) Comment gflatj020920.0001-4 10 J FLAT .0005 5 " "" gflath020920.0001 5 H FLAT .0002 15 " "" .0003-5 30 " "" gflatk020920.0001-5 30 K FLAT I started taking some throughput data but the clouds rolled in again. Change of plan. As it started clearing up I began a S-H run with reference frames. I chose for the object frames the A0 star HD 183919 (B-V=0.2) which at the time was up around the meridian and 60 degrees off the horizon. The data are on the S-H machine, E:\SH\2002-09-20 (UT date): Image Exposure(s) Airmass Comment Ref001 300 Ref002 300 Ref003 300 Mir001 30 1.138 Air-Struc temp diff 0.7C Mir002 30 1.139 Mir003 30 1.139 Mir004 30 1.140 Mir005 30 1.141 Analysis, 1-5: change M2 tilts by -31.0 in X and +8.4 in Y Mir006 30 1.142 Mir007 30 1.142 Mir008 30 1.143 Mir009 30 1.143 Mir010 30 1.143 Analysis, 6-10: change M2 tilts by -36.5 in X and +9.6 in Y Since the sky had cleared completely, I turned back to GRIM. After I found a standard and had just focused it, the next frame showed one dropped quadrant (gtest.0017). It affected all the later frames, but not the quadrant my star was in, so I forged ahead. This star has a catalog designation AS 37-1: Image Exposure(sec) Filter Comment gthruj020920.0001 1.5 J gthruj020920.0002 1.5 J gthruj020920.0003 2 J Offset too big; bad gthruj020920.0004 2 J Good offset gthruh020920.0001-3 2 H w/ offsets gthruk020920.0001-3 2 K w/ offsets After getting the throughput data, I set up an echelle pointing model. Russet arrived just after it ended, looked at the results and pronounced it "okay". We then switched over to DIS for some throughput tests. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan I arrived just at the end of the echelle pointing model and decided to go for DIS throughput measurements. John stuck around to help. We mounted DIS and put in the red low grating for optimum comparison with the post-shutdown throughput measurements from three weeks ago. Our attempts to get throughput measurements were plagued by a series of unusual mistakes, but that turned out just as well because the only standard that was at a reasonable airmass when we started out was Feige 110, much too close to the moon. By the time we finally got everything straightened out, G191B2B was high enough to observe. After the throughput measurements with the low gratings, we put the red medium grating back in (for comparison with throughput measurements taken back in the spring). During the grating change, we grabbed a quick Shack-Hartmann measurement, then returned to DIS and took another shot of G191B2B. We finished with an extra bright quartz measurement using DIS and then took another comparison spectrum using the echelle and the bright quartz lamp on the truss (not the echelle's internal lamp). With that done, we turned to science on SN2002fk using both DIS and the echelle, then finished up with one last S-H measurement and some more echelle bright quartz spectra.
