However, a hole moved in during twilight that looked as if it might be useful, so we opened. As soon as the telescope was fairly cool, we took some Shack-Hartmann data for comparison with the previous night. A few clouds made some of the observations difficult, but not as bad as last night. Next we started a pointing model. The clouds thickened rapidly and the humidity rose further, so we closed. We continued moving the telescope around while the dome was closed, in order to "exercise" it, as requested by Jeff. After midnight, we re-opened under partly cloudy skies and obtained more Shack-Hartmann data to check the results of the "exercise". We got a guider instrument block, some more S-H data, and had just finished a pointing model when we realized to our surprise that the sky was apparently photometric. Hastily, we switched the DIS gratings to the old low-res set (since there was doubt concerning the throughput of the red medium grating) and took throughput data on three stars. We followed that with still more S-H data and a specialized, restricted-altitude pointing model designed to look for flop in the tertiary or secondary. All of the highest-priority engineering tasks have been completed in the last three nights. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:44 S-H 30(1485) 58 58 12.7/13.3 90 11 - avg 02:00 S-H -30(1336) 218 66 11.2/11.7 99 4 - good 03:26 DISslit 80(807) 145 56 11.9/11.4 74 1 - 1.08 04:35 S-H 0(1359) 119 56 10.2/11.1 121 9 - good --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 53 44 22 111 (ESE) 200 cloudy rain 17:01 57 44 12 76 (ENE) 125 cloudy none 18:01 57 44 16 79 (ENE) 322 cloudy none 19:01 55 46 16 76 (ENE) 451 ptly cldy none 20:01 55 44 10 80 (E) 442 ptly cldy none 21:01 55 47 10 86 (E) 666 ptly cldy none 22:01 54 47 9 81 (E) 692 mstly cldy none 23:01 56 46 0 199 (SSW) 710 cloudy none 00:01 55 47 1 212 (SSW) 760 ptly cldy none 01:01 53 46 2 144 (SE) 792 ptly cldy none 02:01 53 46 1 109 (ESE) 838 mstly clr none 03:01 52 46 3 4 (N) 861 clear none 04:01 54 46 0 236 (SW) 1150 clear none 05:01 51 42 6 107 (ESE) 764 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
