I opened at 19:00 MDT. All systems started up smoothly again. Sky was clear for the most part with a light wind. The first program was not very efficient, as we had observers trying to get some GRB data for Don Lamb at UC and they were very unfamiliar with DIS in imaging mode. They did get the data, but as we switched back to spec mode I had a guider crash and a series of small errors that cost time. Finally, we did get back up and running though and got decent data under clear skies. After that fiasco we began seeing image jumps in one axis of up to 25 arcsecs. These kept any observations from being made. I checked all drives for evidence of moths, but found none. I eventually called Jon Davis and Craig Loomis, but we did not find much in the logs that appeared to be at fault. Craig did see some odd behavior in the azimuth at one point. I cleaned all drive surfaces AGAIN and I blew out the cracks and crevices. After that we again tried to recreate the failure, but could not. Since the telescope again appeared to be behaving, I turned it over to second half with fingers crossed. The jumping problems never returned. All systems ran smoothly for the rest of the night. Go figure.... ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW04 D I/S 22:37 22:41 Guider crash UW04 D T/H 23:20 01:00 image jumps, slips in drive? ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:28 DIS Red -150(1190) 142 28 17.8/18.6 83 14 Gunn-R 1.91 22:15 DIS Red -160(????) 127 69 16.6/17.4 81 13 Gunn-R 1.93 22:20 DIS Slit -160(831) 128 68 16.5/17.2 86 14 - 1.41 22:50 DIS Slit -100(883) 134 70 16.5/17.1 73 17 - 0.98 22:56 NA2 Gdr -3074(50927) 136 71 16.5/17.0 75 17 R 0.91 01:15 SPIcam 200(1413) 207 33 16.3/16.3 70 16 r' 1.33 04:24 SPIcam 250(1384) 120 43 17.2/15.6 170 1 r' 1.01 04:29 NA2 Gdr 283(61284) 121 44 17.2/15.7 151 0 R 0.99 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 78 29 7 205 (SSW) 670 mstly clr none 17:01 74 28 1 243 (WSW) 829 mstly clr none 18:01 72 29 0 138 (SE) 654 mstly clr none 19:01 69 28 11 79 (ENE) 401 mstly clr none 20:01 66 31 13 81 (E) 510 mstly clr none 21:01 63 32 17 85 (E) 501 mstly clr none 22:01 62 32 14 91 (E) 538 mstly clr none 23:01 62 32 16 78 (ENE) 525 mstly clr none 00:01 60 33 18 77 (ENE) 629 mstly clr none 01:01 62 31 18 75 (ENE) 514 mstly clr none 02:01 64 25 7 76 (ENE) 341 mstly clr none 03:01 57 34 3 90 (E) 706 mstly clr none 04:01 59 32 4 81 (E) 571 mstly clr none 05:01 63 22 8 141 (SE) 320 mstly clr none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
