Dembicky Engineering tonight with several tasks at hand. I spent the first part of the night getting item number one completed. I finally opened around 00:30 when I finished focusing the slitviewer and was ready to check it against DIS and real stars. We had decent weather with only a few clouds thru the night. 1) Focus/Align DIS Slit viewer - COMPLETED All images are found in /export/images/eng20020528 under the filename 20020528.xxxx. I Checked focus of DIS vs. DISslit after manually focusing the slitviewer camera (double check). I found them to both be at the same point, as expected. Best instrument focus for each instrument was at 0 and performed separately 00:56 for both DIS red and the slitviewer camera. The Blue camera seems to focus slightly different than the red camera (which focused the same as the slitviewer). I found it to be focusing about +30 from the red. I repeated this twice to make sure it was real and both times blue was +30 of red's focus. I found using a micrometer on a magnetic base very useful in keeping track of where the camera was located and allowed me to get a consistent movement and repeatable measurements. The trick was finding something not made out of aluminum on DIS to mount the magnetic base. The NA2 Rotator was just in the right spot to allow the micrometer to contact the back of the camera. All this took some time since I had to cart an X-term up into the upper enclosure and do everything by myself (It is normally a 2 person operation). The micrometer helped immensely. I couldn't figure out if this was just a normal NA2 pointing model (which I could do) but I didn't understand how the slitviewer was going to be used, per her instruction sheet. I decided instead of wasting more time than I already had exerted on trying to figure out what to do, instead go on to the Baffle tests which I knew how to accomplish. 4) Baffle tests - COMPLETED Test baffle in NA2 port with SPIcam. This test also took longer than I anticipated since I missed reading Russet's note to do an OFFSET CALIB 0.0, 0.0 /COMPUTED /PABS to make the telescope track correctly again. It took me about 30 mins, while trying to find a focus star (they were streaking), to figure out what was happening with the telescope. During the last engineering night I did this offset in a different way (I put coords in that moved the telescope the correct amount in Al and Az.). Russets instructions were simplier except for the one that I missed about zeroing out the offset calib. All files are located in: /export/images/eng20020528 I was using both the Pinhole and an Empty slot (no filter) in SPIcam TCC Command: OFFSET CALIB ALT, AZ /COMPUTED /PABS where ALT and AZ are given in the table below.
