High winds throughout the afternoon caused a dust spike around sunset. We were able to open only a little later than the scheduled start time, but the telescope was out of equilibrium since the fans had been kept off. The first focus showed poor seeing and the first target was badly affected by windshake, but a later target further from the wind showed 1-arcsecond seeing with less instability. A small power glitch at 21:57 stopped the enclosure from tracking, since there's no UPS strong enough to support it for short lapses. This ruined an exposure that had started about ten minutes earlier, but we recovered easily aside from the loss of time. The mirror covers also needed to be reset, but no other electronics were affected. Second half was very peaceful aside from some computer troubles at the remote end. Everything worked perfectly. While closing the telescope, I thought I smelled woodsmoke, but couldn't see anything suspicious from the catwalk even when I moved the telescope more than 300 degrees. Perhaps I was smelling a distant fire. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- PU05 D T/H 21:45 22:00 Power glitch stopped encl ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:17 DISslit 50(1082) 253 36 14.1/16.1 260 20 - 1.61 21:21 NA2gdr 330(54330) 254 35 14.2/15.8 254 25 R 1.65 23:43 GrIm2(f/10) 75(880) -36 70 11.8/12.8 262 15 J 0.71 01:09 Echelle 13(-113) 160 67 9.9/11.1 268 21 ND1 1.13 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 68 16 26 202 (SSW) 1016 mstly clr none 17:01 65 16 25 244 (WSW) 929 mstly clr none 18:01 65 14 26 215 (SW) 1437 mstly clr none 19:01 62 13 28 223 (SW) 3899 mstly clr dust 20:01 58 12 20 240 (WSW) 3742 mstly clr none 21:01 55 14 23 246 (WSW) 2173 clear none 22:01 56 13 15 258 (WSW) 960 clear none 23:01 55 14 20 256 (WSW) 869 clear none 00:01 53 15 15 269 (W) 1791 clear none 01:01 50 14 19 264 (W) 2773 clear none 02:01 50 14 19 268 (W) 2078 clear none 03:01 50 12 17 243 (WSW) 1714 clear none 04:01 49 14 16 255 (WSW) 1878 clear none 05:01 47 14 13 266 (W) 2169 clear none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
