There was a lot of dust in the valley and high winds with cirrus. Dust levels rose rapidly near 20:30 MDT but remained just below limits. Smoke was noticed at around 04:00 MDT. I checked and could not find a visible source, but called the sheriff's office anyway. No fires were reported, but the smell was obvious and correlated with a sudden spike in the 0.3 micron dust counts. The clouds also became too thick to observe effectively, so I closed at 04:30 MDT. The smoke smell dissipated some, but was somewhat present when I left the site. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW09 E/I/S --:-- --:-- No lost time, echslit ICC failed ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:35 Echelle 423(449) 67 56 13.9/14.7 285 16 clear 1.35 21:04 Echelle 132(182) 45 44 13.7/14.4 278 16 ND2 1.11 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 65 21 21 259 (W) 788 cirrus none 17:01 61 17 16 263 (W) 759 cirrus none 18:01 60 18 14 253 (WSW) 764 cirrus none 19:01 59 16 20 252 (WSW) 823 cirrus none 20:01 58 18 16 280 (W) 913 cirrus none 21:01 57 19 13 276 (W) 1772 cirrus none 22:01 56 18 11 270 (W) 1095 cirrus none 23:01 57 19 14 297 (WNW) 906 cirrus none 00:01 56 18 13 270 (W) 772 cirrus none 01:01 54 17 13 295 (WNW) 911 cirrus none 02:01 54 15 8 284 (WNW) 709 cirrus none 03:01 53 17 11 282 (WNW) 791 cirrus none 04:01 53 21 13 271 (W) 938 cirrus smoke 05:01 53 21 16 266 (W) 802 cirrus none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
