The dust continued to hover just below the limit occasionally jumping up into closure territory, so the observers spent some time taking calibration images with DIS. Thicker clouds started moving in around 21:00 while the dust kept up right around the limit. Finally the dust dropped sufficiently and the observers wanted to at least try, so I opened just before 22:30. Everything went fine after that. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan The first-half observers stopped taking data shortly before midnight and gave up due to weather a little before their time was exhausted. The second-half observers took the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the new DIS. We focused the telescope and confirmed that there were several magnitudes of extinction, so observing would be useless. When the observers started cals, they found that the images were not being written correctly to disk, coming out with the columns horizontally misplaced. After some floundering around, I was able to confirm that this was because the observers had forgotten to sync the instrument before setting it up and taking images. No usable time was lost to this problem. The observers gave up before twilight when there was not enough time left for them to get data. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST/FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O/TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 22:39 GrIm2(f/5) 50(791) 145 62 10.8/11.6 235 16 J 0.94 01:04 DISslit -50(636) 112 62 9.2/10.0 192 8 - 1.05 01:07 NA2gdr -2437(54562) 113 62 9.1/10.0 213 12 R 0.95 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 61 16 27 208 (SSW) 601 PtlyCldy none 17:01 59 14 17 256 (WSW) 670 PtlyCldy none 18:01 59 15 21 234 (SW) 1040 PtlyCldy none 19:01 54 12 26 210 (SSW) 1641 PtlyCldy none 20:01 52 14 18 213 (SSW) 1884 MstlyCldy dust 21:01 52 15 16 205 (SSW) 1899 MstlyCldy dust 22:01 52 10 12 228 (SW) 1745 MstlyCldy dust 23:01 51 8 10 245 (WSW) 1274 MstlyCldy none 00:01 50 8 6 188 (S) 1601 MstlyCldy none 01:01 49 10 9 205 (SSW) 1346 mstly cldy none 02:01 48 8 10 236 (SW) 1271 mstly cldy none 03:01 48 8 9 235 (SW) 964 mstly cldy none 04:01 46 8 8 228 (SW) 1026 mstly cldy none 05:01 45 8 9 233 (SW) 1086 mstly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
