They did thin out a little near sunset, so the dome was opened for cooling. The observers took a few flats and focus frames primarily for purposes of observer education; there was never any possibility of science. After practicing with SPIcam for a while, the first-half observers decided to switch to DIS for more practice and because it might be more useful in non-photometric weather. Since the telescope was now fairly cool, I closed the dome at the time of the instrument change. The clouds thinned a little after 23:30, and I re-opened. The observers were able to catch one object spectrum and some cals before their time was up. We bad some difficulty with the guider, not only because of the clouds, but also because the filter wheel was apparently in the wrong place (judging by vignetting). I fixed this with the gmech remap while observations were going on and eventually got the guider working normally. Second half remained partly to mostly cloudy with seeing ranging from 1.6 to 1.0 arcseconds. The observers were able to take data most of the time, but the photons accumulated slowly. There were several periods where we had to wait out a thicker patch of clouds. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST/FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O/TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 00:20 DISslit 50(689) 200 53 8.4/8.4 225 17 - 1.11 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 56 24 20 212 (SSW) 1419 cloudy none 17:01 52 21 22 242 (WSW) 995 cloudy none 18:01 50 23 19 208 (SSW) 1037 cloudy none 19:01 48 19 19 223 (SW) 1501 cloudy none 20:01 48 16 20 201 (SSW) 1465 cloudy none 21:01 47 15 17 211 (SSW) 1454 cloudy none 22:01 48 16 20 231 (SW) 1113 cloudy none 23:01 47 15 12 216 (SW) 1138 ptly cldy none 00:01 47 14 19 224 (SW) 937 mstly cldy none 01:01 46 15 17 222 (SW) 937 mstly cldy none 02:01 45 17 20 241 (WSW) 808 mstly cldy none 03:01 45 18 15 268 (W) 713 mstly cldy none 04:01 44 16 13 263 (W) 653 mstly cldy none 05:01 43 15 18 263 (W) 617 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
