Dembicky Started nightly checkout a little late due to the DIS upgrade taking place and the guys up here doing some last minute computer checks. This didn't affect the 1st half observer since he was using the echelle and could do his biases and lamps. Cooling fans were turned on around 17:50 and I opened the enclosure/mirror around 18:15. We started focusing the Echelle around 18:40 and were doing on sky science by 18:55. We lost a fiber tranmitter on SPIcam tonight during checkout so the time was donated to the UW04 program since UW06 had no experience and could not use GrIm or the Echelle. UW04 was already using the Echelle so they just continued on with the donated time until he was finished for the night. John Barentine (EN01) had an Echelle backup program to run for the remainder of the night, after UW04 had finished with the Echelle. It was very COLD!!!! tonight and the structure temperature was bottomed out for most of the night. I kept an eye on the air/dewpoint differential instead of the air/structure to keep track of the humidity. The extreme cold weather wreaked havoc here this morning. First the computer room AC quit cooling. Called Craig and started bringing in air from the outside and used the arcade fans to help draw air thru. Then the NA1 or NA2 eyelid closed but the switch did not report it closed. I manually closed the mirror covers. Then we had one of the enclosure shutters get stuck in the open position. I moved the telescope to point due North and called Jon D and Mark K. Craig is also aware of the problem. I got hold of Mark K. and he is on his way in. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW06/S I/H 18:00 05:37 Fiber transmitter on SPIcam failed Other T/H --:-- --:-- NA1 or NA2 eyelid switch not reporting closed.
