The weather started out looking much better than last night, with lower dust and diminishing winds. Once it got dark I did a simple test suggested earlier in the afternoon by Russet. This consisted of focusing the instrument via the slitviewer, then taking images with the red and blue cameras in imaging mode to compare the focus values. The results showed consistency in the focus between all three detectors to within a few percent, probably due to variable seeing. The dust counts had been up around the closure limit near the beginning of the night but I stayed open anyway because the humidity was low. A little after 8pm the dust counts in the enclosure shot up to 5000 and the winds reached the closure limit, so I closed. The winds dropped again but the dust pretty much put the kibosh on any useful work tonight. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half remained visibly dusty, with thickening clouds. Lots more DISII characterization work and software testing. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:10 DISslit 10(364) 144 55 2.0/2.2 198 28 - 1.30 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 41 6 11 249 (WSW) 1632 PtlyCldy none 17:01 39 3 15 184 (S) 1456 Clear none 18:01 36 5 19 191 (S) 1316 Clear none 19:01 36 5 26 195 (SSW) 1636 PtlyCldy dust 20:01 35 6 23 193 (SSW) 1777 PtlyCldy dust 21:01 36 5 24 205 (SSW) 1547 MstlyCldy dust 22:01 34 8 26 198 (SSW) 2242 MstlyCldy dust 23:01 34 9 19 193 (SSW) 2697 MstlyCldy dust 00:01 33 11 17 192 (SSW) 2509 cloudy dust 01:01 31 12 17 201 (SSW) 2384 cloudy dust 02:01 30 13 15 191 (S) 2465 cloudy dust 03:01 30 10 15 189 (S) 2185 cloudy dust 04:01 30 9 18 215 (SW) 1990 cloudy dust 05:01 30 10 20 209 (SSW) 1841 cloudy dust note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
