DIS was not quite ready to go on sky by the end of twilight, but as work continued on the instrument, the wind began to gust well over the limit, so the time wasn't entirely wasted. The wind was excessive from 19:30 until 01:30. DIS woes included trouble with the turret motors and a dead parallel port on the slitviewer PC, among others. The dome was opened at 02:00, we began doing on-sky engineering (focus and throughput tests) around 02:30, and we started science at 03:15. As soon as the shutter was opened on the first science exposure with the new DIS, the dust went over the limit and clouds began to move in. By changing fan configurations, I was able to keep the dust inside the dome low enough to remain open until 04:50, when the wind also went over the limit. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NM04/D I/H 19:03 19:27 DIS not ready for prime time NM03/D I/H 01:30 02:30 DIS not ready for prime time ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 02:54 DISslit 150(561) 257 67 3.4/4.1 251 23 - 2.3 03:01 NA2gdr 0(57000) 259 65 3.3/3.8 258 21 R 1.6 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 55 12 26 243 (WSW) 751 clear none 17:01 53 12 19 268 (W) 653 clear none 18:01 50 14 25 262 (W) 840 clear none 19:01 48 14 28 266 (W) 750 clear none 20:01 47 14 27 249 (WSW) 626 clear none 21:01 47 14 33 246 (WSW) 467 clear none 22:01 45 14 35 250 (WSW) 516 clear none 23:01 44 15 24 239 (WSW) 480 clear none 00:01 43 15 28 246 (WSW) 451 clear none 01:01 41 15 25 257 (WSW) 439 clear none 02:01 39 15 20 237 (WSW) 728 clear none 03:01 38 16 19 249 (WSW) 982 clear none 04:01 37 18 18 263 (W) 1520 ptly cldy none 05:01 37 18 25 276 (W) 938 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
