We opened with no special restrictions on us like last night. Winds from the North East however made the seeing quite poor most of the evening. Seeing came below 1.5 arcseconds around 22:00 when the wind shifted directions. Second Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half was photometric with unusually warm temperatures (warmer than mid-afternoon!), and wind shifting to the west, which improved seeing. In fact, the seeing was exceptionally good with both GRIM and SPIcam, making it necessary to pursue the focus agressively as the temperatures changed. I chased the focus up to +200 and down to -100. The telescope seemed to like the warmer temperatures, and everything worked perfectly. It was a very productive night, and we should all be grateful for the labors of Mark Klaene and Dave Woods, who shoveled snow off the dome so that we could take advantage of these conditions. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:27 SPIcam 40(630) 238 38 -0.2/1.4 6 12 r' 1.57 18:40 NA2gdr 931(61931) 241 36 0.7/1.4 358 16 R 2.47 00:14 GrIm2(f/5) 100(572) 298 73 5.3/3.3 142 1 J 0.71 00:20 NA2gdr -2848(57151) 297 72 7.2/3.3 260 2 R 1.6 01:21 GrIm2(f/10) 175(706) 293 60 6.3/3.9 240 2 K' 0.47 03:12 SPIcam 0(812) 222 57 6.3/4.5 282 7 i' 0.71 03:14 NA2gdr -40(60959) 223 57 6.4/4.6 280 6 R 0.88 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 36 3 21 15 (NNE) 16 Clear None 17:01 35 2 19 5 (N) 3 Clear None 18:01 34 3 18 3 (N) 14 Clear None 19:01 32 6 17 30 (NNE) 102 Clear None 20:01 36 -2 11 10 (N) 190 Clear None 21:01 38 -1 6 14 (NNE) 84 Clear None 22:01 38 -2 5 1 (N) 37 Clear None 23:01 40 -2 3 181 (S) 48 Clear None 00:01 42 -1 0 216 (SW) 38 clear none 01:01 44 -1 2 257 (WSW) 17 clear none 02:01 42 -3 2 212 (SSW) 15 clear none 03:01 44 0 5 285 (WNW) 13 clear none 04:01 42 0 5 286 (WNW) 8 clear none 05:01 42 0 2 299 (WNW) 8 clear none 06:01 41 0 4 276 (W) 10 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
