I closed until about 2230 when the cloud cover was mostly thin cirrus. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half had continuing thin cirrus and the best seeing I've witnessed in over a year (at least in a narrow IR filter). The visiting observers used GRIM again tonight, after a slight delay in starting while in starting while they worked on the AOTF instrument. We lost some time when I became very paranoid about image elongation that I thought might be from azimuth motors, so I switched to the SH video in order to watch it. After checking a few stars, I concluded that no unusual motion was showing up. When we switched back to GRIM, I was able to confirm that astigmatism in the instrument optics was the most likely source of the image elongation. After that excitement, everything went smoothly, and the observers were able to get plenty of data despite the clouds. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NM01 V T/H 01:02 01:22 suspected az misbehavior ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:07 SPIcam -80(673) 180 58 3.2/3.1 304 15 i' 0.71 18:14 NA2gdr -1500(59500) 183 58 3.1/3.1 297 10 R 0.74 22:46 SPIcam -160(558) 189 80 3.6/3.2 298 15 i' 1.45 22:51 NA2gdr 6(61006) 196 79 3.8/3.1 292 13 R 0.97 01:26 GrIm2(f/10) 100(613) 209 49 3.5/3.0 264 11 1.58 0.52 01:33 NA2gdr -1387(58612) 211 49 3.3/2.9 295 15 R 0.80 05:16 Echelle 19(-277) 108 27 2.1/2.0 297 15 ND1 2.0 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 37 22 7 327 (NNW) 832 Mstly Cldy Nome 17:01 38 20 4 307 (NW) 524 Mstly Cldy Nome 18:01 37 20 11 286 (WNW) 585 Mstly Cldy Nome 19:01 37 21 8 306 (NW) 694 Mstly Cldy Nome 20:01 38 20 9 278 (W) 843 Mstly Cldy Nome 21:01 38 18 11 276 (W) 996 Mstly Cldy Nome 22:01 39 17 16 290 (WNW) 1065 Mstly Cldy Nome 23:01 39 13 14 281 (W) 987 Prtly Cldy None 00:01 38 10 16 284 (WNW) 1145 cirrus none 01:01 38 6 17 287 (WNW) 1196 cirrus none 02:01 38 1 15 277 (W) 1286 cirrus none 03:01 37 2 13 284 (WNW) 1334 cirrus none 04:01 36 -1 19 294 (WNW) 1234 cirrus none 05:01 37 -4 13 298 (WNW) 1779 cirrus none 06:01 34 -5 13 281 (W) 2318 mstly clr none 07:01 35 -5 11 275 (W) 2110 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
