We did a variety of pointing models first half of the night, adjusting tertiary tilt and sag coefficients and comparing the pointing results. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan The implementing of the tertiary sag coefficients went well after a couple of initial mistakes (wrong sign!), and appeared to make a difference in the pointing accuracy with the echelle and Shack-Hartmann. We'll see if that result is lasting. After testing the sag coefficients, I encountered great difficulty in trying to focus the echelle; the software couldn't identify the star. At first I thought it was poor seeing, but the images I checked looked reasonable. Then I found an image which was quite badly elongated. I switched to the Shack-Hartmann to watch the star on the video camera and saw that it was wobbling slowly and irregularly back and forth by about 3-4 arcseconds. I spent the next several hours trying to track down the source of the wobble, and concluded that it was probably the azimuth motors. The problem is serious enough that it will have to be addressed immediately. A little after 04:00, I finally had a chance to get some Shack-Hartmann data. I did an altitude sweep and I believe some of the data will be useful, despite being hampered by primary oscillations at high altitude and motor wobbles at lower altitudes. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 04:16 S-H -25(1145) -14 83 6.2/5.4 10 5 - 1.0 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 42 11 3 224 (SW) 238 Clear None 17:01 40 11 0 197 (SSW) 208 Clear None 18:01 38 12 3 81 (E) 173 Clear None 19:01 37 11 9 36 (NE) 176 Clear None 20:01 39 11 3 15 (NNE) 206 Clear None 21:01 41 9 5 7 (N) 241 Clear None 22:01 41 5 9 48 (NE) 25 Clear None 23:01 42 5 11 29 (NNE) 14 Clear None 00:01 43 3 10 15 (NNE) 11 clear none 01:01 42 1 6 14 (NNE) 3 clear none 02:01 43 0 3 14 (NNE) 5 clear none 03:01 44 1 1 5 (N) 0 clear none 04:01 43 -1 4 0 (N) 1 clear none 05:01 44 -1 5 14 (NNE) 3 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
