Povilas was taking exposures with the GFP earlier in the day and found that they were not getting light into the instrument. I investigated and we found that a small oriface had not been removed from the incoming light path (Povilas hadn't remembered there was one in there). I removed the oriface and that seemed to fix one problem but now there was a shadow in the resulting image. I took the instrument off and looked down the barrel of it, but could see no obstructions. After examining the images and trying various tests Povilas and Don came to the conclusion that it looked like a stuck shutter blade (actually the shutter was stuck open with one of the blades stuck closed, causing the shadow). Don and I went up to the enclosure and performed surgery on the GFP and freed the stuck shutter blade and then re-assembled the instrument. This took about 1.5-2 hrs and finally had everything working again at 20:30. I opened the enclosure at 21:30 and we started focusing around 21:55. When Don moved to his first target, he found that the focus had changed dramatically (in about 30 mins the temperature had risen almost 2 degrees C and a front had moved N of us). We quickly refocused the instrument and guider and everything was happy once again. No problems for the rest of the night. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC04 F I/H 19:06 21:30 GFP shutter stuck ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 22:04 GFP -650(38) 131 57 4.3/5.1 250 14 4300 1.19 22:15 NA2gdr -25000(39000) 145 61 5.4/5.2 258 15 R 1.07 22:46 GFP 100(781) 153 64 5.8/5.3 251 17 4300 0.93 23:05 NA2gdr -3000(61000) 162 65 5.9/5.3 267 16 clear 1.23 03:21 GFP 50(760) 5 55 5.8/5.3 298 17 4300 1.06 03:26 NA2gdr -3772(60227) 4 55 5.7/5.2 299 14 clear 1.00 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 43 26 9 266 (W) 194 Pt.
