Just as twilight started the Primary Mirror Support System (PMSS) Loss of Air Alarm sounded. Luckily, C.Loomis was still on site. Thanks to Craig, J.Davis (phoned) and R.Yarger (phoned) we were able to track the problem down and restore air to the telescope. The PMSS oscillations were damped by hauling the telescope to its low altitude stop. I then opened the enclosure but had a "mystery" stop button pushed. When that was tracked down I turned the telescope over to the observer with about 10 minutes lost of his program. Thanks to Craig for his efforts, it would have taken much longer to restore the system to normal had this happened when I was alone. The seeing first half was moderate and degraded slowly towards midnight. Second half was fair to moderate seeing after the instrument change degrading to very poor seeing as the evening progressed. Again tonight conditions were way too poor for collecting Shack Hartmann data. Seeing estimates were difficult since second halfs observers were using relatively short integrations and we were still opening and closing the NA2 eyelid when the instrument shutter would be opened and closed respecively. Doing this made guiding nearly impossible and seeing estimates few and far between, however at one point in the night the seeing appeared to be fluctuating between 1.5 arcsec and 6 arcsec. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW07 D T/H 17:58 18:10 PMSS loss of air ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:27 DISslit -175(241) 150 48 2.1/4.0 8 5 - 1.78 18:29 NA2gdr -3569(49430) 150 48 2.2/3.9 0 9 R 1.27 20:59 DISslit -175(222) 41 73 1.4/1.6 282 7 - 1.49 21:00 NA2gdr -2528(50471) 40 73 1.4/1.5 342 9 R 1.40 00:23 GFP 0(390) 142 53 -0.8/-0.8 17 11 6717 1.36 00:31 NA2gdr -1303(58696) 145 54 -0.8/-0.7 21 20 clear 1.12 02:46 GFP 50(345) 269 72 -1.9/-1.9 21 17 6717 2.21 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 38 16 8 308 (NW) 104 Clear None 17:01 37 17 4 275 (W) 116 Clear None 18:01 36 16 8 306 (NW) 83 Clear None 19:01 36 16 11 10 (N) 65 Clear None 20:01 35 16 12 355 (N) 56 Clear None 21:01 35 16 8 342 (NNW) 74 Clear None 22:01 33 18 8 1 (N) 81 Clear None 23:01 32 19 12 18 (NNE) 81 Clear None 00:01 31 20 17 17 (NNE) 72 Ptly Cldy None 01:01 30 17 13 12 (NNE) 73 Clear None 02:01 29 17 14 29 (NNE) 70 Clear None 03:01 28 17 14 356 (N) 80 Clear None 04:01 27 16 13 359 (N) 72 Ptly Cldy None 05:01 26 17 1 282 (WNW) 73 Mstly Cldy None 06:01 25 17 14 22 (NNE) 77 Mstly Cldy None note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
