Dembicky I started the cooling fans around 17:20 tonight. During checkout the bay 2 gratings in DIS were a ways off from where they normally are (like 60 steps). I though perhaps this was in error and tried moving the gratings a couple times but indeed they were off that much. When I adjusted them as recomended, they lined up. This took me about 15 mins longer than expected, but I was still able to give the instrument to the 1st half observer shortly after sunset to start their cals. We opened up around 19:25 under mostly clear skies (with just a little thin cirrus) and thunderheads with light off to our east (approx 40-70 miles). Don Lamb persuaded the 2nd half observer to give up some of his time (swap) for DIS observations of GRB021004 tonight. I have charged this against the UC02 account and Russet will fix it if it needs to be charged elsewhere. When focusing the DIS, using the slitviewer, the slitviewer died on me unexpectedly. I restarted it and all seemed well. When I handed the slitviewer over to Bertrand, he could not get it to take an exposure without also dying on him. Repeated attempts didn't seem to work for him. I took the slitviewer back and it seemed to work fine from here so I took the slitview images for him. PR was submitted on this problem. at 03:30 the humidity started an upward swing and the seeing did as well. By 04:00 it was bouncing above and below closure conditions. About the time I was ready to close the humidity would drop 5%. It roller coastered between 65% and 88% typically changing by 4-5% every minute for the remainder of the night. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:38 DISslit -100(772) 89 61 11.3/14.3 223 11 none 1.55 19:47 NA2gdr 76(54076) 90 63 11.4/14.0 208 6 R 1.32 20:16 DISslit -130(801) -76 40 12.3/13.5 224 9 none 1.07 20:23 NA2gdr 126(54126) -76 40 12.3/13.5 231 10 clear 1.10 01:00 DISslit 70(827) 209 75 12.3/12.2 292 8 none 0.99 01:07 NA2gdr -50(53950) 213 74 12.6/12.2 286 11 R 0.87 03:52 DISslit -80(760) 266 43 10.7/11.8 179 3 none 1.44 03:56 NA2gdr 3(54003) 267 42 10.5/11.7 179 6 R 1.05 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 63 34 20 234 (SW) 381 Clear none 17:01 60 33 12 228 (SW) 352 Clear none 18:01 59 32 16 215 (SW) 402 Clear none 19:01 54 28 12 211 (SSW) 487 Clear none 20:01 53 25 8 235 (SW) 346 Clear none 21:01 55 24 10 231 (SW) 314 Clear none 22:01 53 23 7 224 (SW) 252 Lt.
