Began focusing Grim about 20 minutes after sunset; seeing was steady around 1.1 arcsec in R with fluctuations occasionally up to as high as 1.6 arcsec. Things got worse toward 22:00 with spikes into the 2.5 arcsec range. Grim behaved normally. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: J. Dembicky At 01:50 the observers reported a mystery object (actually the image of an out of focus 3.5 primary mirror) in their image. Here is the relative information of where the telescope was pointing at the time. 20020121-mystery-object.fits 01:50 RA 07:24:14.0 Dec -00:31:38.2 AZ 234.3 EL 41.5 SPIcam using 1x1 bin mode with SDSS u', 240s exposure 20020121-mystery-object2.fits 02:05 RA 07:24:14.0 Dec -00:31:38.2 AZ 237.3 EL 39.2 SPIcam using 1x1 bin mode with SDSS u', 480s exposure We have seen this type of reflection before in the guider, but this is the first time we have managed to capture it on SPIcam. I have copied their image as 20020121-mystery-object.fits and 20020121-mystery-object2.fits in export/images. It did not appear to move between exposures. The enclosure was dark and It wasn't a reflection of the moon since that had set 2 hrs prior. The ghosts seemed to all be in the u' images, but not g', and several more were seen on exposures thru the night. Everything ran smoothly otherwise. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION -------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:53 GrIm2(f/5) 0(229) -22 64 -2.8/-2.3 295 11 J 1.06 19:33 NA2gdr 0(60000) 99 60 -2.6/-2.9 319 14 R 1.08 19:54 NA2gdr -3018(56981) -118 37 -2.5/-3.1 331 16 R 1.13 20:04 GrIm2(f/5) -50(230) -116 36 -2.4/-3.1 319 17 J 2.72 20:11 NA2gdr -4982(55017) -115 34 -2.4/-3.0 301 16 R 1.11 21:59 NA2gdr -3823(56176) 157 46 -1.8/-3.0 319 20 R 1.59 21:59 GrIm2(f/5) 0(249) 157 46 -1.8/-3.0 319 20 J 1.77 00:13 SPIcam -50(416) 238 40 0.1/-0.8 299 10 g' 2.48 00:28 NA2gdr 872(60127) 242 37 0.1/-0.5 303 23 R 2.32 03:21 SPIcam 0(389) 195 56 -0.1/-0.4 322 7 g' 0.71 03:32 NA2gdr 0(61000) 195 56 -0.1/-0.4 340 18 R 1.07 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 28 -7 1 337 (NNW) 248 Clear None 17:01 28 -8 3 261 (W) 180 Clear None 18:01 27 -7 14 325 (NW) 195 Clear None 19:01 28 -7 17 321 (NW) 162 Clear None 20:01 27 -6 12 296 (WNW) 184 Clear None 21:01 27 -4 13 314 (NW) 309 Clear None 22:01 29 -5 23 311 (NW) 181 Clear None 23:01 30 -4 19 316 (NW) 281 Clear None 00:01 32 -7 27 299 (WNW) 196 Clear None 01:01 32 -7 18 320 (NW) 184 Clear None 02:01 33 -5 24 321 (NW) 193 Clear None 03:01 32 -5 19 338 (NNW) 176 Clear None 04:01 32 -4 21 334 (NNW) 174 Clear None 05:01 32 -4 19 338 (NNW) 144 Clear None 06:01 32 -3 15 340 (NNW) 94 Clear None note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
