Camron Hastings Mostly clear with some cirrus at startup, other than that nice. All startup went smoothly except that the NA2 Guider Mac lost the auto NSF login stuff. It can be accomplished manually. The dome was opened at 17:54 MST after the first observers finished their cals. Nothing else of note. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: Russet McMillan Towards the end of first half, the observers reported a rise in the red chip background levels, and I found that DIS was warming. I consulted with Mark, who said the cameras were too warm to be safely cooled. The first-half observers switched to GRIM for the remainder of their time and got some data, but the thickening cirrus posed some problems for them. Also, two of their DIS exposures taken before the switch to GRIM came out unusable due to dark current. When the second half observer logged in, he was unable to make use of the time with any other instrument. We managed to find another UW observer who was awake (in Germany) and offered the time to him. It did take some extra time to get SPIcam ready. The cirrus also caused trouble for this observer, but we managed to check for focus offsets among the various filters (they appeared consistent with each other to the limits of our ability to measure in the seeing) and got some test images for use in planning future observations. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG/INST FAILURE MODE TIME S/E/G/D/O TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION -------------------------------------------------------------------- JH01/D I/H 21:30 23:05 DIS warm -- switched to GRIM UW01/D I/H 00:10 01:10 DIS warm -- long SPIcam setup ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:07 DIS Slit +10(503) 212 42 1.6/3.4 191 9 none 1.19 18:09 NA2 Gdr 368(57366) 212 42 1.7/3.3 190 8 R 1.02 23:01 GrIm2(f/5) 25(476) 198 56 3.1/2.2 265 11 J 0.87 01:25 SPIcam -50(570) 85 43 2.3/2.3 266 13 Halpha 1.18 01:32 SPIcam -50(560) 85 44 2.5/2.2 266 13 6629 1.22 01:38 SPIcam 0(611) 86 45 1.9/2.3 266 14 V 1.46 01:44 SPIcam 0(603) 87 46 2.9/2.2 264 10 I 1.16 01:46 NA2gdr 1622(62622) 87 47 2.1/2.3 269 11 R 1.42 01:54 SPIcam 0(593) 88 49 2.6/2.1 245 7 4750 1.30 02:01 SPIcam -25(569) 89 50 2.9/2.2 236 10 Halpha 1.44 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 40 0 15 233 (SW) 99 lt cirrus none 17:01 36 -1 15 217 (SW) 111 lt cirrus none 18:01 35 -1 9 192 (SSW) 123 lt cirrus none 19:01 37 -11 6 221 (SW) 49 lt cirrus none 20:01 38 -17 9 265 (W) 70 lt cirrus none 21:01 37 -12 11 232 (SW) 63 cirrus none 22:01 38 -1 13 262 (W) 112 cirrus none 23:01 37 2 4 251 (WSW) 133 cirrus none 00:01 37 5 12 263 (W) 182 cirrus none 01:01 36 5 15 261 (W) 181 cirrus none 02:01 37 4 11 215 (SW) 132 cirrus none 03:01 38 5 11 194 (SSW) 183 cirrus none 04:01 38 4 13 226 (SW) 173 ptly cldy none 05:01 38 5 12 216 (SW) 184 ptly cldy none 06:01 39 1 10 207 (SSW) 98 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
