Everything went smoothly during checkout, and the observers were able to get twilight flats. The sky was clear and apparently photometric despite cirrus near the horizon. Seeing was once again quite good, at least during first half; the first focus values given below were undersampled since the observers binned SPIcam 3x3. There were a few concerns about image quality, such as obvious astigmatism on the focus frames and a large focus change as the telescope came into equilibrium, even though it had been open for a few hours. Under poor seeing conditions, some of this probably wouldn't have been noticed at all. The seeing deteriorated for a while around the middle of the night, but never got actually bad. Eventually it returned to subarcsecond values. The DIS observations during second half went smoothly, until some clouds began to move in as twilight arrived. There was an MCnode failure, apparently caused by network difficulties, just as we were about to start morning cals, but this didn't interfere with the science. ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:49 SPIcam -50(1118) -40 53 15.4/17.7 13 7 r' 0.85 19:52 NA2gdr 1732(61732) -40 52 15.5/17.6 5 9 R 0.88 21:14 SPIcam 100(1232) 73 43 15.4/16.2 11 9 r' 0.94 00:57 DISslit 75(999) 194 51 13.3/14.8 7 9 - 1.55 01:02 NA2gdr 3042(59042) 196 51 13.8/14.8 8 11 V 1.17 02:13 DISslit 125(1057) 231 45 15.3/14.8 37 13 - 1.01 --------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 17:01 67 31 5 283 (WNW) 162 cirrus none 18:01 63 26 8 323 (NW) 207 clear none 19:01 60 26 2 355 (N) 225 clear none 20:01 59 25 9 10 (N) 201 clear none 21:01 61 25 5 9 (N) 198 clear none 22:01 61 26 7 24 (NNE) 215 clear none 23:01 61 25 7 359 (N) 211 clear none 00:01 59 28 5 353 (N) 216 clear none 01:01 57 31 10 13 (NNE) 191 clear none 02:01 59 30 11 30 (NNE) 194 clear none 03:01 60 25 16 55 (NE) 167 clear none 04:01 59 24 12 58 (ENE) 188 cirrus none 05:01 58 25 1 0 (N) 262 cirrus none 06:01 58 29 0 217 (SW) 204 ptly cldy none note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
